trying to time a 23c diesel. what is easiest way to tell if #1 cylinder is on compression stroke. is putting a gauge on the crank the best way. this has always confused me. thank you for any pointers.

are you using a service manual,as the standard can be difficult to time.TDC on the engine is with the keyways in the crankshaft are pointed down(6 oclock) and the exhuast valve has or is about closed and the intake valve is about to open
