Since I've had my tractor the battery has been installed with negative going to ground. while working on a starter problem, I noticed that the starter button was wire with one side going to the cellinoid and the other to ground, which suggests a positive ground system. The electrical shop said indeed that tractor was originally positive ground. The system seemed to work with the battery reversed. How do I tell which way is right? Will I fry anything, if I put it back in with the positve as ground? By the way, when I saw how the starter button was wired, I changed the redirected the ground wire to a hot lead tomake sense with the negative ground battery installation. It

Mike... might I add one comment... You said your starter was acting up... When folks replace wore out battery cables they often times use a cable repair end. At the best they don't work very well for very long. The next thing they often do is put a cheap cable that was designed for a 12Volt system. Its far to small to carry enough current (juice) for the starter to function properly on a 6 Volt system. Its just like a water pipe... the bigger it is the more water that will go through it. Have you checked your starter to see if is dragging. Its not that big of a job to take it apart and clean it up check the bearings and sand the comutater with a strip of comutater paper... Your brushes might need replacing also.

Mike, I currentlt have a 30, and have not had any problems with the elect. system yet, so I cant speak about the Ferguson. For 15 years I specialized on English sports car restoration, repair, and racing. Jaguar, Austin-Healey and Triumph (which used a very close version of the TO20 Standard engine) all used positive ground Lucas systems. Many customers had us convert the positive ground to negitive ground so they could install current radios. With the lucas system all we had to do was swap the battery cables, swap the leads on the "amp" gauge, and repolarize the generator, by scratching the now + wire across the field windings post on the generator a couple of times.

Thanks to Paul and Biv for your reponses. I did not indicate before that my tractor is a TO-20. I saw a manual today that did show that the 6 volt system is(or at least was) positive ground. As I said, the battery was installed with negative to ground. I don't get why it still worked. Maybe the charging sytem wasn't working, and I didn't realize it. I was having a problem with the starting system; not enough power to the starter. I had a bad wire in the starter plus a weak battery, so this was confusing the picture.

If I reverse the ground, I know that it won't effect the starter, but what about other components. Do I need to reverse polarity o

Mike - is your system 12v or 6v? The '55s had 6v (+) ground. If so, the site that biv referred you to also has the 6v diagram. You will note the 12v system has a (-) ground system. Just look for the album index.
