I am looking at purchasing a Ferguson 35 with live PTO but no power steering. Is it possible to retrofit power steering on one of these tractors?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hello Troy -

Retrofit kits are now available, but pricey. Around $1900 Cdn, $1250 US.

In order to use the stock system, you have to have an engine block that has the mount for the p/s pump cast in(it is gear driven.) You may be able to get around this, but it won't be cheap.

Hello again, Troy -

Looking at your post again, it might be helpful to ask why you'd like the power steering. The 35 tractors are great machines, and the steering is one of the nice features.

Light, smooth, allows tight turns. If you're considering a front end loader, power steering helps, but the front axle assembly is not strong enough to carry a heavy loader, so the steering is a sort-of safety valve. If it steers hard, there's too much weight in the bucket!

Jack:

Thanks for your response. I went ahead and purchasesd the TO-35 and have had a chance to work with it a few weekends. It seems to steer pretty easy for me so I think the power steering is not needed.

The previous owner told me it steered hard and this concerned me for when my wife might do some mowing. With a bush hog on the back I would think it would be even lighter up front and thus not a problem for her then.

Once again, thanks for your post.

Troy

Guess my loader(Wagner WF3) is too heavy for my tractor, it's hard to steer with nothing in the bucket, and I've had the rear wheels come off the ground when the bucket is full(no counterweight, but the tires are loaded,) but somehow the front axle has survived 45 years(loader came on the tractor) of abuse, with the first 20 in a gravel pit loading trucks.... Guess I'll have to have a look at it when I rebuild the engine(hopefully next spring, should have the garage built by then...)
