I'm helping my dad with axle seals on a '50 or '51 TO-20 and am brand new at this so please forgive my ignorance. We have successfully dissassembled to the point where we have the axle laying on the workbench. Of course the spline is at one end and the bearing assembly with seals is on the other. The brake assembly has been safely removed and is off to the side. Question is how to get to the seals. I'm ready to take this axle to the dealer to have him use his gear puller and install the seals for us -- or am I missing something? I'm guessing that if I do take it to the dealer with the outer and inner seals we've already purchased, he shouldn't be charging for any more than one hour labor at this point. Do you guys concur? Thanks for your response(s).

I have just learned how to do this . drill a 1/4 hole in the lock collar that is next to the bearing. Cut the collar at the hole with a chisel until the collar cracks. Stand the axle on a solid oak plank with the bearing side up. Pound the axle down . Keep pounding the axle down on the wood until the bearing slowly sides down and off.

I just finished removing the the rear axle hub from the axle. The collar inboard of the bearing is easily removed by drilling a 1/4 inch hole on both sides of the shaft. you will have to buy a replacement. I did not have any luck trying to remove the bearing, even with a heavy duty puller. Ended up cutting the bearing cage & removing the rollers so that we could get heat to the bearing inner race. Good luck!
