Ferguson TO30 starter lore

A longtime fellow TO30 owner I was talking to on Monday mentioned that his gear selector starter switch setup had been disabled (as has mine).

He said most TO30 owners he knew did this because sometimes coming out of reverse you would hit the "S" selection while the engine was running, and it would damage or break the nose off the starter.

I hadn't heard this, but it makes sense, especially if your shifter has some wear in it like mine, and it's pretty easy to go straight from R to S.

Any other folks have problems with the original starter switch setup? Is yours original or have you changed it?

And by the way, many thanks to Kim for setting us Fergie owners up with a separate forum!

Happy tractoring,

OldKyJim

OKJ - I have a '54 TO-30 and have had no trouble with the mechanical starter. When I restored it I installed a new switch on the mounting plate. The mouting plate has slots enabling one to move the switch forward or backward before tightening the bolts to adjust the "touch" of the mechanical connection. If installed and adjusted correctly, I see no problem.

This is a problem with this setup for the starter switch. In fact, one can break the starter drive housing if you fully engage the starter. I own a 1950 TO-20 and when I bought it the starter solenoid was bad. The shifter had to be jammed all the way forward as far as possible to activate the starter. After I replaced the solenoid, I found that it takes very little forward movement from the neutral position to have the starter activate. I fixed this by putting thick gasket material under the solenoid where it bolts to the tractor. Now it takes a more forward movement of the shifter lever to activate the starter. I no longer have a problem of hitting the starter when shifting into reverse.
