Can you tell if a dead TO35 has live PTO?

Looks like I am the proud owner of a 'project' TO35. Any way to tell
if this has the dual-stage clutch without
getting it running? The valves for the
loader come out of the trans-top
inspection cover, if that's any clue.
Supposedly, machine is from mid-50s, it
does have the 134 gas. Thanks!!

Thanks for the advice! Serial is "SMG",
could feel what you were talking about in
the pedal, plus I pulled off the cover and
looked (sorry not to think of that before).

Any recommendations on a service manual? I
understand the I&T may not be so good (covers
too many models). Does YT have a good one?
I had real good luck with the MF dealer's regular
old factory version for a MH30, but I suppose
the companys weren't merged at that point.

I am looking forward to getting it running. Only
problem is someone put the rightside rear on backwards! Guess she'll turn right well anyway,
'til I get it switched.

If these tractors are all basically the same (and I agree with you) why does this site split the discussion on them over 2 different forums? You usually have to end up looking in both places to get the total picture.

I agree - the TO-35 ends up having questions posted about it in both the forums - it was kind of the "bridge" tractor - it was both a Ferguson and a Massey Ferguson.

Of course, the 50 was both a Massey-Harris-Ferguson (my Dad has one labeled that) AND a Massey Ferguson.

Yikes! what twists our old friend Harry had with is moving from company to company.

Actually, the Ford 9N should also be classified a "Ferguson" as it had the Ferguson system.

The 8N, of course, would not be classified a "Ferguson" because it was made without permission from old Harry and ended up being changed (to remove the infringement on Harry's pattens) in the NAA and numbered series.

I bought my service manual from the local MF dealer. Also bought both the operators and parts manuals. They are reprints, but the quality of the reprint is good and the price was right. Have fun.

Another approach:

If the serial number plate is still attached under the dash, it's coded with this information.

The third letter is either M (dual clutch, live PTO) or F (single stage clutch).

Well, you should be able to feel both clutches when you stop down on the clutch pedal. The first stage (ground travel) will be towards the top and the second (PTO and hydraulics) at the very bottom.

Also, if you have someone with you, put the PTO in gear (under the seat to you left) and push the clutch part-way down. Then, have your helper turn the PTO shaft by hand. If you have live PTO, it won't turn. Now, push all the way down on the clutch. This should release the 2nd clutch and the PTO shaft should turn.
