I have a broken right side axel on my Ferguson.
I think it's a TE 20, there is "NOT" a tag on my steering column. There is a #8637 on the left side of the column, and ?1/100? on the right side. It has a continental engine Z120A-800 and a tag
that says Continental Motors Corp. Motor No 41174A
The gearbox housing is magnesium electon.
My axel housing only is marked by the #4 R and 3 R
Am I able to use axels from a TO if I change both sides and use the whole unit, axel and housing.

I have a 1949 TEA20, and I've seen other TEA20s that have been converted to the Continental engine. It's not right, but with a little work on spacing out the front axle support it will go in. When I took mine apart, I saw that the old TEA20 flywheel must have been used. The bolt holes had to be redrilled and the job wasn't too good. Might have flown off the handle at any time. Interestingly, mine uses the Lucas type distributer cap. I'd like to make the tractor right, or else try to recover some of my ill-advised investment.

Hi Tom
What you have is a Te-20 they only came with the Aluminum transmission and the top tranny cover is one peice with the steering collum. I don't know where you are located but call these guys they just parted a nice Te, good hood and grill if you need it.Downing tractor, Downing Wisconsin,1-887-530-4010 or www.asapagparts.com they have 6 stores in five states.

Thanks for responding,I have gone to my local tractor supply/junk yard, and they had a shaft from a TEA that had a larger OD than mine. Then they brought in a TO rear end pulled the shaft, and we found that the spline OD was the same, and the tooth count was the same, but the spline end of this shaft was differant. Also the distance from the end of the spline to the end of the shaft was not the same.Thats why I'm wondering if it would be best to convert to a differant shaft if I did both sides with housings included?

From memory, the half shafts on the TE series were 'beefed up' after serial number 200,000, this was to prevent what happened to yours, happening.

Is it possible that your TE is (like mine) an early one ie pre SN 200,000 that has the leaner, slicker (and weaker) half shaft?

Perhaps you need to be looking for an early donor vehicle - I don't know how any conversion to different shafts/housing would go . . . . .sorry.

If it helps, I can point you in the direction of some knowledgable types over here in the UK - at least you could email them . . . .

You could try battelle@btinternet.com (Old 20 Parts Co.) for starters, or www.belltractors.com (or maybe its bell-tractors.com) in Ireland, or www.holland-brand.co.uk may be able to help.

I suspect there is an age/design level thing going on here, and that you will need to be very careful before you try to 'mix and match' parts. It could be an expensive experiment if you don't get some decent advice.

You have a TO20 not a TE20 because of the Continental Motor and Magnesium alloy transmission, neither of which are found in TEs. Just get a To 20 axle

Not necessarily, Rick,

Mine is a TE, and has the aluminium alloy gearbox housing - which was common to all TEs (at least, over here it was).

There are also a few TEs over here that were fitted with the Continental motor from new.

Either way, I would suspect that the half shafts, axle castings etc. were all 'common' so should be interchangeable.

Magnesium Electron gearbox housings were only fittd to tractors manufactured in UK, Detroit machines had a cast iron gearbox and Continental engines were fitted to both.Rear axles were modified from serial number 350,000. All early tractors were identical but part changes were made over time and there is no list for interchangeablity, its a matter of checking parts list numbers.
