Ferguson TO20 Information needed before Sunday!

Sorry guys.. I grew up on Farmall tractors and don't know much about Fergusons. I and my wife's cousin are going to look at a Ferguson TO20 Sunday morning and would like to know as much info about this tractor as possible. It has a loader on it and Matt is going to use the tractor for cleaning his horse barn and clearing snow in the winter so it will be used year around. We live in northern Illinois about 10 miles from Wisconsin. Owner said engine has a complete OH, rear tires are fair, fronts are weather checked, everything works and is askiing $2,200 with the loader (made by Superior) on it. Is this a decent price? What should we look for as possible problems that this tractor might be known for (like hydraulic system problems, etc.) Is a Superior loader any good? Is this tractor made in the US? Are there dealers for parts? What horse power and what years was the TO20 made? What are standard size tires? Any other info will be appreciated. Ken

overhaul or not ask for the owners word that the block is not cracked. 20's are notorious for the blocks cracking between the cylinders. if the crack is at the top of the block it's no big problem. (the head gasket will seal the crack) if the cracks are the bottom of the block you have a major problem!!!! checking the engine oil for water doesn't always work.

The TO20 is a good tractor for the work you describe.

Go to your library and look for a copy of a tractor restoration book they have purchsing checklists.

But basicly check for the following:

Start up, Blue smoke in exhaust is an indicator of burning oil. Look for an oil pressure of above 20 psi. 15+ after warm up is acceptable. Some say oil pressurs as origional gages were inacurate.

Pull the dip sticks (Engine is on front left below oil fill tube) Trans-hydrolic is on rear right near the seat. Look for water in oil etc.

Open the radiator and check the coolant.

Run the hydrolics up with a load on them and shut the tractor off and see if they fall quickly, slowly or not at all. (Indicator of leaks in system)

The name plate and serial numbers are on a brass plate at the stearing wheel. Print out the S/N list at the left (under "Research & Info") print both the TE20 list and the TO20 list may also want to have the TO30 list also. The SN will start with a TO or a TE then have the number this will tell you what list to go to.

Look on the right side of the engine for the cast engine series numbers. A "Z120" will confirm a TE or a TO tractor. A "Z129" indicates a TO30 engine.

HP TE/TO are around 24HP the TO30 is higher. TE's and TO's are the same tractor and are very similar to the Ford 8N.

For parts: Most all parts are easily obtained. A lot of tractor parts are interchangable with the Ford's (engine parts are not)

I had new tires put on my Fergy in Oct 2001. Rear tires are ~$120 each $25 for tubes. Fronts are $40 with $15 tubes.

Price seems fair.

I can't answer all your questions, but:
1) the price is fair if everything is working (based on 'tractor values' on left side of this screen)
2) it was made in the US about 50+ years ago (see production nbrs at left)
3) Massey-Ferguson dealers and junk yards have parts
4) Sometimes they suffer from cracked blocks if mistreated, but a professional overhaul should have addressed that
