Fe35 starting

I have a grey/gold 4 cylinder diesel fergie made in 1957 ( ser no 434900) with CAV manifold heater. The engine and injection system are totally rebuilt and the glow plug is new but this tractor will just not start at all when cold without ether. Once hot its fine. I know the 4 cylinder diesel had a fearsome reputation from new for not starting but were they all this bad when new? Are there any improvements/modifications around? I have tried taking the flat off the pump driveshaft to allow an advance of timing by about half a tooth.

ihave a fe35 with starting joys so after having to rebuild the starter i start it with 2 batteries 24volt the extra speed starts it every time even at -20

Hi Rick -

The most effective fix is heat (clue: it starts well when warm).

An electric block heater, or a heater in the lower rad hose works well. 15 min even on the hottest summer day.

Aside from this snag, they are great engines. Ours had probably 5000 hours on it at overhaul, and the crank had no appreciable wear - took standard size bearing inserts.

Jack is right. An external block heater or lower rad.hose haeter workd very well. 30 min. to an hour should work fine and your tractor should fire right up.

Dear Steve and Jack Thanks for the tip. The idea of having to heat a tractor to get it to start is just amazing in the mild climate we have here in Australia ( Canberra where I live is about as cold as it gets in agricultural regions with minus 6 centigrade in winter). I have also heard that modifying the inlet manifold to take heater at number 1 rather than number 4 helps. I have tried modifying the timing to advance it about 1 spline on the pump driveshaft by grinding off the flat on one end). That helps when starting midday but not in the morning. Cheers Rick

See also posting on MF forum. I have heard of someone filing out the combustion chamber opening a bit won't be doing mine that way! Glow plug head is best engineering answer, block heater is probably next best practical solution but is a bit inconvenient. Like most of us FE35 owners you may end up sticking to the "whiff of ether" system. I always have to heat mine with the manifold heater when cold but as its a show tractor and I don't need to bother in the winter, it isn't really a problem. When we did use one in the UK winter with temperatures similar to yours we used to drain the water each night and fill with hot water in the morning - and we still always needed heat and often ether too.
