I take it your jumping across the battery, that tells me your battery is either drained, or it might have a dead cell. I'm assuming it keeps running after you take the battery cables off?
If you have to buy a new battery, an 8 volt battery will help spin it a little faster.

Got a starter/generator rebuild shop nearby? Take the generator and voltage regulator and have them diagnosed. If one/both are faulty you're set to have them repaired or replaced. A 6V system is just as reliable/dependable as any other starting voltage-properly maintained! Using any other voltage is a crutch to bypass normal maintinence. The primary reason for slow cranking is using wimpy 6ga cables(12VDC system) they will not carry sufficient cranking current. Use at a minimum 2ga cables, 0 ga is factory original cables.

Do the simplest things first, make sure the battery is good, charge it, then have it checked.
6 volt systems are not as reliable as 12 volt systems, thats why we don't have to mess with them anymore, they are why 8 volt batteries and starting fluid were invented.

With all due respect, I gotta say I agree with Ray. Unlike cars, these old tractors don't have radios, AC, computers, dome lights, turn signals, etc., etc. Six volts is enough if you maintain it properly.

Yes i plan to keep the 6 volt system, i also noticed thet the batt cable going from the start switch on the dash to the starter is a 4 ga cable.i have had the batt on a 6 v charger from 5:00 pm eastern time sunday to 1:30 pm east time monday and the hyd still has it in the bottom of the white(fair) almost in the green (good)? is this a long time it is a 6 volt 6 amp charger?I also used a 12 volt car batt to junp it on the tractor batt to batt not sure if that was a good idea.

I think you've charged your battery long enough. Find the amp-hr rating of your battery and divide it by 6, that will tell you the minimum charging time needed(your charger) if the battery is run down. Usually the battery will be partially discharged enough so the lights will still burn dim. This is about 1/2 charge, so your charging time will be approx 1/2. Don't be misled by the 12V hysteria, following that thinking, we'll soon be reading about guys adding a 24V system onto thier old tractors. It's not a good idea to connect mismatched batteries (12v to 6v). If you use a 12V battery to jump start a 6V system connect directly to the starter and bypass everything else.BE POSITIVE THE GEARSHIFT IS IN NEUTRAL AND BRAKES SET!.

I would think that anyone who has charged a battery for almost 24 hours, and it still tests bad would soon realize that maybe I have a bad battery??? Go out and buy a new battery and start your tractor.

Used a DC volt meter to check batt the reading is 6.43 volts.Did a check with the regulator & it looks like the gen is bad so i am taking it to a ele shop. Also if you run the tractor & remove thenag cable when its running & the engin quits this will tell you that the charging system has a problem.
