Clutch snatch

I've noticed my TED clutch tends to snatch on take-up. At a show at the weekend I noticed my friend's tractor was also doing it and someone else there mentioned that his did it too even although his had a new clutch in it. Another guy said they all tend to do it. I'm wondering if this is true and if an adjustment to the pressure plate is needed.

To behave as per design intent a clutch friction plate must be perfectly polished and smooth (not the case with a new clutch plate) and the clutch cover plate and flywheel must also be similarly smooth, true and polished - any failing in any of these areas will lead to grabbing/snatching.

Often, when a new clutch is put in, neither the cover plate not flywheel are checked or faced-off on a lathe to restore surface condition - so although the slip has been eliminated, the cause of the snatching remains.

Even with all new components, a period of bedding in will occur, when the surfaces are polished by use - during this time, snatch will also occur, and then dissappear once run in.

A badly worn clutch plate will also snatch for a while before failing/slipping badly.

I am happy to say that none of the TEs I've driven have suffered from this fault unless they have a known clutch maintenance issue.

Hope this helps.

In addition to James UK comments, you can get the clutch plate sticking on the drive shaft splines for one reason or another, this can happen even on a new plate.

Used to be when we put a clutch in a car they'd all do that at first. We'd just chain er to the truck and ride it good for a little bit. After that they worked perfect. You just have to get the "fluff" off the disc and get the pressure plate and flywheel polished. 28 hp takes a little more time to do that than a 300hp V8. Hope this helps.
