Anybody seen a perkins p3 do this

Today my fergy (fitted with a perkins P3), after a radiator change, ran low in water, I topped it up with the engine stopped. 2 mins later as I restarted it threw large amounts grey oil and water out of the crankcase breather and oil filler cap. The engine ran for about 20 seconds and in this time about a gallon of oil/water came out. Later on I tried to turn the engine and it was fine IE no water etc above the piston. I dont think that the head gasket is blown. Whilst running the engine sounded good as per normal. The crankcase has been found to contain in excess of 2 gallons of watre/oil. Has anybody seen catastrophic corrosion damage /failure in these engines, or possibly core plug failure leading to large amounts water in the oil.

When you ran low on water, did you notice because it got hot or because you saw the level down?

If it was because it over heated, you may have caused a big problem by dumping cold water in a really hot piece of cast iron. When you do that, the cast iron can crack quickly and badly. Engines need to cool down before adding water after an overheat session. Also whenever adding water to a warm/hot engine, keep the engine runnning while adding water VERY slowly. This mixes the little bit of cold water very quickly with the warm in the engine and prevents any cold pockets of water from hitting hot metal.

I hope that's not the case, but from your description and if I you meant the engine was hot when you refilled, the symptoms sound right. I can't think of another reason for it to behave as you descibe. Let's hope I'm wrong.

the engine was not hot and was allowed to stand for about 10 mins in anyway, before the water was added.

If it was cool then the senario I proposed probably isn't it. Core plugs are almost always on the outside - probably not that. If the reason the water was low was due to an existing leak that you didn't know about (sounds like that might be it) then you've got a couple of possibilities - a head gasket, which on a deisel is a strong possiblity or a crack some where. You don;t say where ur from. If a cold area, did you keep antifreeze up to snuff during the winter? If you always use water did you PROPERLY drain the system over the winter? I say properly because some engines will retain water (freeze and break) in some spots even if the hoses are removed. I don't know if that's the case with a Perkins. Maybe some one else would know.

Other than these suggestions, I'm stumped. I think you need to pull the head.
