Good Morning
Something real werid happened to me yesterday, My tractor was running and I had a freind over, he was admiring how it was running. I opened the hood of the tractor as he wanted to see the battery and gas tank. He reached over and grabed the positive cable and it was loose. He pulled it off and the tractor stopped running. I thought , what the heck is going on here. Now my question is this, do I have it wired wrong? I have done nothing to this tractor since I bought it. It was wired this way from the begining. HELP

The battery must be connected for positive ground. You should measure approximately 7.5-8 volts at the battery terminals with the engine running at half throttle, unless the battery is already at full charge. This indicates the generator is working, and if so, the engine should continue to run when a battery cable is removed. If you only measure 6 volts with the engine at half throttle the battery is not receiving a charge. Switching on the lights with the voltmeter connected will show a quick drop in voltage followed by an immediate return to a positive charge reading if the generator and regulator are working.

Good (afternoon) Barry!

It's a petrol tractor? Well, no electricity means no spark, so unless your engine revs were high enough for the dynamo to chuck out enough to keep the ignition coil energised, no way it will keep running. Thinking about it, even if the revs were high enough, the regulator would probably go into flat panic mode with no battery connected, so the engine would die anyway.

Or wasn't that the question? Could be a translation thang. . . . . have I missed your point?

(If it isn't revving very slowly) I think the tractor should keep running with no battery; the combination generator/regulator sources the current to both run the tractor and recharge the battery.
Maybe the generator or regulator just conked out lately and you have been running from the battery without knowing it. Quite a coincidence though.
With the tractor running you could measure the voltage at the small tab (field) on the generator and see if you have a couple of volts or so. If there is nothing there then the field is not being energized (by the regulator) and the generator can't generate.
Jim
