My ferguson 40 is locked into a foward gear, but the high/low works and the main shifter can be moved into all four gears R,1,2,3. However, when it is in Reverse it tries going forward, but boggs down like the brakes are on. Any help is appreciated???

I don't know too much about the F40 which is why I didn't respond earlier, but it is probably suffering from the same problem that the TE/TOs and 35s all get sometimes.

As the end of the gearlever (shifter?) wears, it is possible for the operator to get the gearlever out of connection with the selector - so you end up leaving it in one gear, and then trying to select another - so you lock up going either forwards or backwards.

Easy fix (10 minutes), with tractor STOPPED remove gearlever, and look into gearbox, using large screwdriver or similar, get all the selectors lined up in the middle (neutral position) - when you first look, only one should be out of alignment with the rest - that's the one that has slipped out and is the gear you are currently in.

Then try starting tractor (from the seat, not standing next to it!!!!) and check it is really in neutral. Then replace gearlever, taking care to get the ball on the end of it into the neutral 'slot' of selectors. Carry on driving.

Unnerving when it first happens, but not a big deal.
