I know this is probably a lost cause, but here goes. When I was cleaning the block to replace the head gasket, I noticed a small crack between each of the cylinders (in the block). Do I have an expensive lawn ornament or can this be saved?
Thanks , W.S.

I had a block with the same cracks. The repair was made by a local crankshaft repair shop in Cincinnati. They drilled and tapped at right angles to the cracks, thru the block and put in all thread to pull it back together. Then I put in KW block sealer and it works great.

You don't state where the cracks are in the block. If they are in the deck of the block between the cylinders, you can ignore them. The head gasket with some aviation gasket sealer will take care of them, because of the seal the head gasket provides with the cylinder sleeve.

I have a TO 20 that I bought at a steal back in 1964 when I worked at the local Ford dealership because it has the same cracks between each cylinder at the bottom.

I scratched my head for a day or two and then came up with the idea to drive lead into the cracks and then using new seals and sleeves put it all back together and take my chances. I used the lead from 22 bulletts since they are soft lead. It worked and is still working!!!

I did install some "Bar's" stop leak when I put it all back together. The same antifreeze or all that is left of the original antifreeze is still in it from 1964 also because I have never drained it except to do repairs on the engine.

This was all before the advent of all this modern glue and stuff to plug cracks!! I think if I had to do it today I would use JB Weld after thourough cleaning around the cracks. Just be sure not to allow any to extend into the portion of the block where the seals go so it won't hold the seals off.
