Ferguson FE35 Glow Plug problems

I have a FE35 that is blowing glow plugs when I turn on the key. Since I believed the problem was too much power going the first plug I put in a 30 amp breaker switch. This still didn't solve the problem. How does this tractor control the glow plugs? There is what appears to be a 30 amp resistor in the glow plug circuit, is this the problem? How are the plugs supposed to be wired, in parallel or series? I don't know the history behind this particular tractor so anything could have been tampered with before I got it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Pat -

By the sound of it, you have the engine with 4 glow plugs in the head, on the injector pump side.

Earlier ones had a mini blowtorch in the intake manifold.

The glow plugs are wired in parallel, with a hefty dropping resistor in the dash and a warning light mounted on the dash and/or a resistance wire feeding the plugs. The plugs apparently operate at either 6+ or 9+ volts, depending on manufacturer. They draw 30 to 40 amps current when all 4 are operating.

The original resistance unit was 829 150 M1 or 890 004 M1. A chap in NC found a hefty radio shack resistor to replace his unit - don't know the rating, but I can find him with a bit of digging in my old files, if you'd like to contact him.

How do you make out getting the glow plugs? There was some discussion earlier on the board about sources.

The plugs are wired in series, not parallel. There is also a resistor in series with them, but I'm not sure as to how many ohm's it is. The manual (which can be found on this web site) has information about it.

Thanks for all the info. I believe we have it all worked out now. The glow plugs weren't actually too hard to find. A local diesel service garage had them.
