hi,i recently put a new starter switch on my to30,it was switched to 12volt system except the starter that is still 6 volt,my question is i want to know if it matters what stud the positive cable goes to and which stud the wire to the starter goes to,when i say studs i mean the ones on the starter switch,(the threaded studs)i don't know if there is another name for them.the reason i'm asking is because i put the pos. cable on one stud and wire to starter on the other,and the tractor would turn over and want to start but wouldn't. i switched the wires on the studs (reversed them) and the tractor started.i was told that it didn't matter which stud the wires went to but i think it does,i don't know why.also there is a wire going from the amp guage to the starter switch,does that sound right?the amp guage always reads a little below 0 isn't it suppose to read in the positive when running? i think i'm drawing juice from the battery when the tractor is running, every now and then the battery goes dead. i know i asked to many questions but any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. PS. i finally got my steering wheel off, i was trying for 3 weeks.

thanks guys for the help, i asked a guy at work and he said as far as the ammeter reading neg. that the wires need to be swapped, i think he said on the back of the ammeter or the ignition,i can't remember which one he said now.as far as the tractor not starting it was the wire coming from the ammeter,it has to be hooked up to the stud on starter switch,the same one the pos. cable goes to. the tractor is neg. ground 12 volt but has the 6 volt starter.thanks for all the help,i just got in from moving snow around with the tractor,it has a bucket loader on it i love my tractor!

Second question first: Since your battery drains, I'm going to assume you are not getting a good charge and the ammeter is not hooked up backwards. I believe it should be hooked to the ignition switch. You should check out your generator (now alternator I assume) and voltage regulator to find the reason why it is not charging. First question second: I don't know why it would matter which cable went to which stud on the starter switch, but perhaps you just get a better connection from those cable ends that way. In other words, the cables are a little stiff, etc., and maybe the ends just fit better one way than the other, or maybe one cable has a break somewhere and when you bend it a certain way that shows up. That's kinda grasping at straws. If it works one way and not the other, go with the way it works. As to the old 6 volt starter, it should be ok using 12 volts, unless you grind it excessively trying to start the tractor. Let us know what you find out.

Jeff,

Phil has raised a good question re alternators and dynamos.

A quick check - you do have a 12V dynamo do you? If it's a 6V one, it'll never charge your battery enough, so it will sometimes go flat.

OK, lots of questions. Well done on the steering wheel - dogged persistance pays off at last!

Firstly, even if your starter ran backwards, it would not throw the starter into gear, as the 'thread' on the Bendix gear would run the wrong way. Therefore, your starter will only run one way.

Having the wires the wrong way round on the switch MIGHT (depending on your wiring) mean that when you released the starter, the +ve supply to the coil ceased, so no spark any more. Look at your wiring and think about it a bit or use a wiring tester type screwdriver to chase the voltage. Someone may have rewired it a bit wrongly in the past.

Is your tractor now -ve ground instead of the original +ve? If so, someone forgot to reverse/swap the connections on the ammeter, so it is reading -ve when it means +ve. To check this, connect another ammeter to the circuit (eg handheld test meter type) and see if it agrees with the ammeter on the tractor.

The tractor ammeter should be connected between the battery and the starter switch (connections dependant on polarity).
