Hi all

Im having trouble with the regulator on my TEA (6v) it drains the battery, when i stop it...And it doesnt charge propperly due to this..... I noticed this when i put it back to the original + ground. when i put on the battery cable to ground, theres a spark, and i can hear something in the regulator, whats up here???? and it works just the same when it has negative ground...

I have had the regulator, and the dynamo to our local starter/ dynamo shop, and they say its fine.... I come home and put it on, and it doesnt work... The wiring seems correct according to all the prints iv found....

Regards Jone

If when you put the (second) battery cable on the battery there is a spark, then there is a short between the positive and negative current on the tractor. One way this can happen is through the starter switch, which is somewhat prone to this situation. Not discounting that the VR might not be the problem, but since you had it checked, perhaps it is shorting someplace else, and my experience is the starter switch can be chronic this way. Something to consider.

I had similar problems, on one occasion the distributer points heated up so hot they went black and lost their spring! So i ripped out all the wiring, there were loose ends, wrong connections and DIY bodges everywhere - and a large quantity of moss - despite the tractor being dry stored and regularly run all its life and showing no evidence of damp whatsoever, perhaps moss likes 12v DC???!.
Anyway i rewired it according to the manual and it has been no trouble at all since.

Hmmm. Well, if you get a big spark when you put the second cable on the battery, it does sound as if you have a short somewhere. Does the ground cable get warm? You could try unhooking from one side of the switch and see if it still does it, to verify absolutely the switch isn't to blame. Not to beat a dead horse, but I had one that sometimes would work ok, but sometimes wouldn't. I took the switch off and put a ohmmeter on it, and it appeared ok. But one day the switch caught on fire, so that made pinpointing the problem pretty easy.... I guess the point is to just use deductive reasoning and try one thing at a time until you find it.

One other thought. Where is your ground connected? Normally it's on the back of the dash, right? Sometimes that isn't a good connection. Try using a longer cable (same large cable size, just longer) to a better ground and see if that helps.
