Cranks but doesn't start

Today I took a warm day to try to start my TO-20. When it last ran, about a month ago,it suddenly sputtered and stopped, with no obvious warning beforehand. I couldn't restart it. With some suggestions from this Forum, I checked the gas flow to the carb (strong) and removed and replaced the clean-out-screw to exit any crud from the carb. Today brought the same result. Strong battery and cranking performance, but no starting. I am at the end of my mechanical skills, but thought someone could give me a sense of what area to look at next. Should I take the carburator off and have it cleaned or adjusted? Or might the problem be in another area I know nothing about--like points and distributor, condenser? Then I would have to ask some favors or pay a mechanic to come to our farm. There is no winter need for the tractor, but on warm days we could finish bringing in the wood to the woodshed--so it would be nice to solve this problem sooner rather than later.

Thanks in advance.

As Rod said, check for good spark. You have verified gas to carb. If you have spark at coil wire, check a plug wire, same way he suggested for coil wire. Should be hot blue spark when you hold it off a half inch. Only takes spark, fuel, air, and some compression. Probably compression and air are ok. Test for spark and respond back and we'll go from there. As Rod said, it could be the condensor, cheap and easy to replace with just screwdriver.

take coil wire off distributor cap place it about 1/4 inch from the block crank it over and see if you have spark if no spark could be condenser this is easy to change.

Thanks for your response. Tested coil wire for spark when cranking and had NO spark. What do I do next? Next part in line is the coil, I think. I am hopeful that the solution is in this direction. Thanks in advance for the help.

Well, it sounds like it is electrical all right. Might very well be the coil. However, I still would take Rod's advice and change the condensor first and try that. The condensor is cheaper. If that doesn't work, you could swap out the coil. The other possibility is the ignition switch. You can jumper around it to test it and if it starts you know that was the problem.

Thanks for your ideas. I will try the condenser first and then have the coil tested. I appreciate your response during this holiday season.

Just started the tractor up today, with a break in the cold weather. Coil tested OK; coil wire had a small split so I replaced that. New coil wire and a new condersor --and that old Fergie just started right up--after not working for almost 2 months. Thanks for all of your ideas. It is very satisfying to have fixed it without having to call a mechanic!! And I have learned for the next time.
