Do Hand Cranks exist for the TO30?

There is much talk about hand cranking procedure, but what about the actual cranks themselves? Did Ferguson make cranks, and if not, how to fabricate one. Does anyone have a picture of a TO30 handcrank? The hole below the radiator is about 7/8", but the bolt on the pulley is larger than this. I have also heard about spring action cranks that will disengage after the engine has started, but am completely naive from there.

i made a hand crank for my to 20 with the jack handle/lug wrench from a chev caviler. all i did was drill a hole in the the flat end and drove in a roll pin. i only use it to roll the flywheel to set the timing, i'm too much of a sissy to try to start the motor with it.

Took this info from info on the N-Forum

Took a length of 5/8" rod (originals were 11/16" , so I was close), added the studs on the end, used the torch to heat up the rod and bend it into the right shape.

5/8" steel rod from the hardware store, 3'long. Drill a 1/4" hole crosswise about 5/8" from the end. Insert a 1" piece of 1/4" rod into the cross-hole, and choose your favorite method to secure it. I tack-welded it in place with my welding torch.

Now you've got a a rod with the two pins on one end. 1/4" is a good size to engage into the crank nut teeth (you could probably use a chunk from a long 1/4" bolt too). I ground away the pins on the back-side, that is, the side that should slide out against the nut once the engine fires. This probably isn't necessary, but I see the later cranks were machined this way, so...

Fit this rod into the front of the tractor. You might need to trim the pin just a bit to fit through everything. I have one of the old front bumpers that's curved down to clear the crank hole. It's got a trailer ball in the front of that, so I heated the rod and bent it down at a point that would clear the bumper. Heat again about 8" down and bend back up for the handle.

The entire job took about an hour. The 3' length was long enough, though I could trim off an inch or two at the end. Now I'll wire wheel it, prime and paint. Still looking for a place to store it on the tractor....

On the TE series, there was a bracket on the LH side of the gearbox (where the split is for the rear diff casting, under the front of the seat pan). This bracket had a large round hole in it for the starting handle 5/8 rod, with two small 'ears' for the 1/4 inch lugs.

You could put the starting handle vertically through this bracket, and then rest the 'drop' to the handle across the top of the gearbox, where there is a convenient channel between the bolts and the split. This then left the handle pointing vertically up just under the front of the seat.

If interested I can send you a drawing so you can fabricate a copy. It's a typically neat Ferguson solution.

Thanks for all the help.

Is there anywhere in the manuals which speaks about the hand crank?

I have the original crank for my 1953 TO30. If/when I get the time (probably after Christmas), I'll measure it up and post a sketch with measurements. Better yet, email me so I won't forget, then I'll have your address to send the sketch to you. All Harry Ferguson tractors came with a crank, set of wrenches, and quite detailed owners maintence manual. The one thing I never figured out is how to hold the choke closed while cranking the engine by hand. I'm sure glad I've kept the 6V system in good condition and don't have to use the hand crank even though it's neet to have it with the tractor.

Ray, we used a clothes pin(one with spring) on our 1936 Ford sedan as I remember. Could do the same with Ferguson although don't know why they didn't have a friction type grommet at least.

Tony-

Well, my dad told me he could make a hand crank that would make our tractor start. I was skeptical, but sure enough, he made one, and it worked fine. I took a pic of it for you. This link will take you to my PictureTrail album, and the crank pic I added is at the bottom. If you need any details about specs, let me know.

Ken, great job on your TO-30. Nice album, too. I've never heard of PictureTrail. It seems to be a great photo site.

I have a Ferguson crank that I bought for my F-40 but it is too short for the 40. I'd like to sell it if you are interested. I think it would work for the 30. If you measured the distance needed, we could make sure.
