Crankshaft Pulley

I am replacing the governor on a TO30. What is the best way to remove the Crankshaft pulley bolt? And to keep it from spinning?

As I recall, I used a long breaker bar braced against the ground, and then hit the starter. Loosened right up.

An impact if you have one. Or take the starter off, have an assistant hold the flywheel gear with a pry
bar.

Be careful putting the bolt back in. The bolt is very soft, not a graded bolt. I don't know what the
torque is, just get it plenty tight but don't twist it off! Some silicone under the washer will help
prevent an oil leak.

Here's a chart, use the grade 2 column for whatever size the bolt is.

I got the pulley off it came off pretty easy. Now that timing cover is like on there good I dont want to miss anything up, how do I get that thing off?? I took all the bolts off, I know it has 2 dowels near the oil pan, do I just hit a pry bar around the edges??? I don't think its ever been off before.

I got some advice from jvin248 last May on this. Here is what he said: If you do need to dig into the governor .. the governor system cover on the TO35s I have are cast aluminum, so quite possible on yours too. Be very careful trying to pry the cover off, there are two dowel pins from the cover into the block that like to corrode themselves in place. It's easy to crack the cover trying to wedge anywhere except right next to the pins (and still be careful).

I got the cover off, just took some time.

I have a question about the spring inside the cover, I'll post a pic. Is it supposed to look like that? or is something rubbing wrong? Also when I pulled the cover off that tab wasn't at 8:00 it was at like 11:00.

That's not the spring, that is the end of the lever that the umbrella
pushes against to move the gov arm. It should be pinned solid to the shaft
and move freely. The little worn dimple is normal and of no concern.

There is a leaf spring below the arm, it is an anti surge spring. It needs
to have the adjustment screw backed out until it doesn't touch the spring
and bend the spring as far down into the cover as it will go. It is really
not necessary as you want all the travel you can get out of the governor
action.

The tab on the umbrella is to keep it from spinning. With the cover off it
can swing to wherever gravity takes it. It spins up against the step in
the cover when running. Just be sure it is in a position away from the
lever, 6-8 o clock is fine.

Thankyou Steve, much appreciated.

From what I can see the the bumper screw (tapered end) is touching the spring I will try to back it out a little.
