Hole in transmission housing

So, I suppose I figured out why I got this TE-20 for cheap ... was trying to figure out why the steering was so stiff, no oil in there. Looked down at drain plug at base of transmission housing, and there's a couple of rust holes in there. Gears inside look a bit rusty too but not TOO terrible.

Somehow the hydraulic 3 pt works fine, PTO, shifts fine, runs good.

Pretty clearly someone tried to weld it, but I presume it's cast iron and tricky to weld. I can do MIG, and have a stick welder, but I'm not experienced with it.

Any experience with best thing to do here? Cut a cover plate from mild steel and JB weld it on? Or have a pro welder braze/weld it on?

I once had a hole emerge at the 6 o'clock position on a Ferguson TEA-20 Transmission...
The Housing was melted down WWll Salvage.. Aluminum alloy.????

Ooof. Well, maybe that'd actually be easier to weld than cast iron!

It seems strange how far proud of the rest of the housing the drain plug area is ... did they grind all the way through a 3/8 of an inch of housing with an angle grinder???

I did find a cast iron housing from a TO-20 for a reasonable price 2 hours from here, which I presume would fit. Seems like a massive amount of work to change though.

(quoted from post at 07:30:32 01/17/23) Now if you were in the NW, I might have one.

Thanks! Funnily enough I have a whole TO30 sitting in Oregon (ran when parked 12 years ago!), but I'm in NJ now, and it'd cost more to ship here than it's worth, sadly.
