I have four LPG tractors and like 'em. Did Ferguson or Massey-Ferguson make a small LPG tractor? 30 HP range? I know about the big ones manufactured by Minneapolis-Moline for M-F but am curious about the littler ones. I would love to have a TO-30 on LP! but I doubt it exists.
My little gasoline TO-30 does quite well as is, too.

On my way to Birmingham Alabama from home yesterday I stopped to gas up and there was a TO 30 sitting there on a trailer with an Oklahoma tag on it. It caught my eye because it had a propane tank on top of the engine. The hood was a jacked up affair on top of the tank. I talked to the man inside who was eating lunch. He had just bought it and was on his way home to Georgia with it. He had another spare tank on the trailer beside it.

I think it would be a problem to get the tanks refilled unless you had a system yourself to do it since Propane laws are so much more stingent now than when these tractors were converted or manufactured.

Wonder why propane is so much more dangerous now than then????? ???

I think I smell "big brother"!!!!! ! And I don't like it!

The first production propane tractor from the MF stable was the MF 50, introduced in 1958. In 1956-1957 M-H-F had a prototype program to produce a propane version of the MH50/Ferguson F-40. It was to be called the Ferguson F-45. A few protypes were produced and field tested but the tractor was dropped in favor of the MF 50 which became available in gasoline, LPG, and diesel. The full story of the protype Ferguson F-45 will be published in one of the next two issues of FERGUSON FURROWS, the newsletter of Ferguson Enthusiasts of North America (FENA).

This was not a factory conversion but my grandad bought a used TO-20 in the late 50's. It was original at that time. He had a local L.P. supplier convert it over. He couldn't use the original hood with the tank that he mounted over the engine so he took it off and stored it in the barn. He also added a hydraulic pump out the front off the end of the crank at that time. The tractor ran fine this way with a mounted loader for close to 30 years. We converted the tractor back to gasoline in the mid to late 80's. The conversion back was easy as the hood was still in the barn and the original carb and gas tank was still on the shelf where grandad left it. We haven't touched the engine and she still runs like a clock. We finally painted her this last summer and she was displayed at the Ferguson show in Illinois in Sept. Not sure if any of this is of any help but it was fun to reminisce.

Operated two tractors one summer (1956)that were factory equiped propane burners. A Massey 44 and a UB MM standard. They ran very well and were not fuel hogs.

I think what happened is deisel fueled engines became more popular. Propane was more difficult to handle. If you were far from home you needed a nurse tank. Just my thoughts. And I guess you would need a fuel supply for gasoline or deisel also.

What are the advantages of using propane as a fuel as aposed to petrol. I have always been curious as to why many fork lift trucks run on propane.
Cheers Mike

What happened to this thread? I am very interested in opinions and facts about propane tractors.
