Exhaust blowing oil.

I have just rebuilt my TEF20 (1954 Diesel) and it is running like new but after running for about 20mins it starts to blow engine oil out of the exhaust! is this from warn valve guides?? can anyone advise me please

Paul,
Is it engine oil, or partly burnt diesel? Once you know the answer to that, the solution is easier.

If it is engine oil, then yes, it is probably either worn valve guides (in which case you've got no problems with upper engine lubrication!!) or it could be a leak path on the head gasket where the oil gallery feeds up to the cylinder head from the block. How much play was there in the guides when you rebuilt the engine?

Either way, it's going to be a head-off job.

If it's partly burnt diesel, check your timing. Diesels are funny animals - they can run (and often start) fine with the timing a mile out - but they will throw out a lot of unburnt gunk. (Just ask any Series 2a diesel Land Rover owner)

I'd start by checking the timing, and then get the head off if you don't find anything has slipped.

I had my FE35 diesel rebuilt and had the problem after about about 1 hour of slashing... of oil dripping from the exhaust. Yhe mechanic who rebuilt the motor said to give it some hard work so I hooked up the MF 3 disc plough but the oil continued to drip making a mess on the steering arm and the tie rod. At this stage I told the mechanic the bad news that he will have to pull the motor down again. He was not happy, as can be imagined. In the meantime I had bought a 60" Howard Rotary Hoe and decided that if the Fergie was stuffed I might as well make it very stuffed so I hooked up the Howard and went for it. Well I have about 6 hours of rotary hoeing now and not a drop more oil has been spilt. Motor is now running very sweet and has been hot enough to burn of all the oil from the exhaust.
It seems that to bed in the rings really needs hard work. The problem with the 3 disc plough is that when it dug in the tyres lost grip and slipped but with the rotary hoe the work was so hard that I actually stalled the motor a number of times! I guess it is from the load via the PTO. Anyway I am very happy with the Fergie now.
