when turning the steering wheel to the right on my to20, the shaft seems to rise right out of the tube. is this an easy fix? how much skill does it take to fix it?

if it is the entire thing raising from the cast housing check the three rivets. if it is the wheel alone check top bearing - (a nice little job to get the wheel off, tho...)

it is the wheel and the spindle it is attached to.
the wheel comes off easily (ithas a dorman key and slot). the shaft seems to screw itself out of the housing.

Either side of the steering box close to the gear you'll see a nut about 0.75 inch/20mm across, in the centre of which is a screw. Loosen the nuts, and then screw in the adjuster screws to remove the slack. The problem you have sounds like the worm gear on the column is trying to 'climb' out of the steering box.

This is another good thing about the TE/TO series - almost everything is adjustable for wear - except the driver ;-)

Try it and see.

james,
tightened the two screws but the shaft is still climbing out of the housing. what else would you try.

All I can say is that some mornings it certainly feels that way. Maybe it's the home brew.
