Larry, From your serial number your tractor was built in 1959. The letter S means it is of standard width, the D means it is fitted with a diesel engine, and the M means it has a dual clutch. The last Standard 23C diesel engine was fitted to tractor no 166596, so yours was near to the end of the Standard line. The early FE 35's were painted light grey bonnet and mudguards with gold engine, transmission casing and axles. The first red and grey was built in Nov 1957, and early red/greys still retained the Ferguson front bonnet badge, rather than having the MF three triangles. Whilst I say red & grey, I beieve, (but I'm not certain), that in fact the early MF 35's had a silvery, flint grey engine, transmission casing and axles with red bonnet and mudguards. I think the later 3 cylinder engined 35's were painted red and the darker Stoneleigh grey. Someone might know for certain and help us out on this point. Your starting problems are characteristic of the 23c engine - they were always known as pigs to start. Just a small tip, if you must use ether to start it, use WD 40 it's kinder to the engine.
