Ok guys. I am use to problems with 12- volt systems, but I am learning from start with a 6-volt. I bought this TO-30 last summer restored. Just in the last month, it has not been able to start on it's own. I think that the volt gauge did work, but last time running, it did not show any movement from zero. It's hard telling because the gauge reads from neg 30 to pos 30 volts. So the differance of an expected 6-8 volts on this meter is hard to clearly identify. So, where do I begin? And, how dificult will it be for me to fix it? Thanks, to everyone. I consistently read this forum because it has taught me so much more about my tractor than any other source.

Hi Jim my TO20 did the same thing.First check the generator brushes.Make sure the brushes are touching the commutator, clean the carbon dust out with air NO CHEMICALS . Also check the brush springs.Next remove the voltage regulator(disconnect battery first)check the cut out relay contact with an ohmmeter. Ohmmeter should read 0.1 ohms. If the contact reads higher then say 1 ohm then clean and polish it with 600 grit emery cloth. recheck the resistance until you have it clean. Cleaning the cutout relay cured my charging problem.I think with a charged battery and tractor running the voltage should be 7 to 8 volts. If you have any more questions post back or email me .Good Luck

First off, the gauge on the tractor is an ammeter, not a volt meter. It measure amps, not volts. Remember your tractor is positive ground. Now, your problem could be lots of different things, including a bad battery, bad generator, cable problem, etc. First make sure the battery is good. If it has a bad cell it won't take a charge. Any battery store can test it. Then charge it, or get a new one if necessary. Get a voltmeter. Reinstall the battery. Make sure all the connections are tight, bright and clean. Your battery cables should be #0 (big), not the #4 or #6 of a 12 volt system (smaller). If they are not #0 or at least #2 at worst, replace them. Crank the tractor and put the voltmeter on the battery and tell us what it reads with the engine running. Also look at the ammeter. If it doesn't show to the positive side slightly and / or if the voltmeter across the battery doesn't show at least 7 volts, chances are your generator might need overhaul. Remove it and take it to any generator shop and they will check it out.

Excellent advice! If your tractor has working lights, they will brighten up considerably if the generator is working, when you speed up the engine with them turned on.
