I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A MF35 4CYL AND AM WELL AWARE THAT THEY ARE HARD TO START. THERE IS A NEW HEATER PLUG ON THE MANIFOLD BUT ALL THE PIPE WORK TO THE HEATER PLUG IS MISSING. THERE ALSO SHOULD BE A VALVE OR A 3 WAY TERMINAL ON THE BACK OF THE FUEL TANK WHICH IS ALSO MISSING( I THINK THIS FEEDS FROM THE RETURN ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL FILTER, THE BACK OF THE TANK AND THEN A FEED GOES TO THE HEATER PLUG). IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY OF MODIFYING THIS (CAN I CONNECT THE FEED DIRECTLY TO THE HEATER PLUG, FROM THE FUEL FILTER TOP). IS IT ALSO POSSIBLE TO FIT GLOW PLUGS TO THE ENGINE INSTEAD(ENGINE IS A STANDARD DIESEL).WOULD ANYONE KNOW WHERE I WOULD GET A SIMPLE WIRING DIAGRAM FOR THIS TRACTOR AS WELL(STARTING,CHARGING AND ACCESSORIES IT IS +VE EARTH). ANY HELP OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I have one that has a manifold flame heater that starts ok (in summer anyway) Used to work with one that was a bit more difficult. We used to drain the water each night in winter and fill with hot in the morning to get it going. Also have heard of someone drilling a couple of holes in the manifold and injecting a squirt or two of oil just above the inlet valves so that it rans into the cylinders and temporarily increased compression worked. - he did admit that it filled the shed with smoke when it did start. Probably not a wise move unless you were careful about the amount. I've also heard that opening up the pre-combustion chamber opening in the head (correctly!) helps. All very interetsing but I think I'll stick with the hot water advice. Oh, and a can of easistart as a backup too maybe. It was an ever present thing in our FE35 toolbox.

I believe you have an FE35. It has the Standard 4 cylinder. This engine originaly came with glowplugs. A good engine but hard to start under most circumstances! Most of these engines always need to be started with the glow plugs. I have an original manual for this tractor... If you need any other info let me know!

I never saw one with glow plugs! All the 20c's and 23c's I have seen have been with the flame heater in the manifold. So if you say that it originally came with glow plugs - sorry to say so, but they must have been built in later.
The plumbing behind the tank includes a small fuel container filled from the return line to the tank. The manual describes it quite good.
When it works, you should turn the key to the preheat position until the manifold starts grunting, then crank the fire into the engine - and bingo!

Hello -

Thyge and Bernie - you're both kind-of right on the Glow plugs.

My Coventry parts book says they were fitted for special export applications only; my US parts book says fitted after chassis number 188 851.

We've had both glow plug and starting aid/intake manifold heater/blowtorch types, and both started hard. Beautifully smooth after starting and clearing out the smoke during warm-up!

The heater units are available, the plumbing parts would have to be found in a salvage yard or cobbled up.

The reservoir is important, and has to be plumbed properly (line to heater connected to the bottom hole) to retain a few tablespoons of fuel for the manifold heater. Running the heating unit dry - even for a few seconds - can fry a $40 unit.

The best starting aid I've found is a block heater, or heater in the lower rad hose. 15 min in summer, an hour or two in winter.

If you can find one the cylinder head from an Allis ED40 has glow plugs it shared the same engine as the FE/MF 35 it will make it a better starter.The 23c engine in the MF had a very poor reputation,probably it put a lot of people off the ED40.
