Help!
My TEA is running horribly, missing all the time, and running extra bad and putting out periodically. I have replaced the induction coil and condensor, and renewed the fuel line from the sediment bowl, replaced the sediment bowl, flushed the tank, and checked every connection of wires. I need ideas for the problem before my Dad gives up and sells the tractor! The most infuriating thing is, it runs okay sometimes, and horribly others.

Hey Andrew, don't let your dad roll your T off into the river yet. Recently my TE-20 would start and idle but didn;t have enough power to move an inch. I figured the problem was rust flakes in the carb, and sure enough, about 1/4" in bottom of the float bowl, preventing gas from getting to the jet for higher speed running. I don't know how the rust got past the inline fuel filter I have, and I rebuilt the carb in 99, but the little critters migrated anyway. You might take a peek in there, too.
Good luck!
Tex

Thanks!
I pulled the carb to bits a while ago, cleaned it, and had it properly tuned, with all the fuel problems I've been having, I suppose some rust could have got in there. Also, the fuel line on mine connects to the side inlet, which has been tapped. A bolt is screwed in the other one. I read somewhere that there was some kind of screen on the side inlet, which may not be on mine, could this affect performance? Thanks for the idea!

I have just pulled the carb to bits, guess what! about 2mm of rusty scud in the float bowl, which mixes with petrol. I have also looked at the fuel inlet switch which cuts the flow when the bowl is full. It is hard to blow through. Should this be,and is there meant to be a ball valve in this assembly, or do I have a stone? Looks like I'm getting close to the problem!

A defective dist. cap can cause problems such as yours depending on humidity.
Also check spark plug and coil wires. You might even use a jumper wire to eliminate the ign. switch. Ign. points are shinny and have correct gap?? A little water in gas can cause problems.
Might try gasline antifreeze. Good luck!!

Thanks!
The distributor is one area I haven't really touched. I had a friend fix all the gizmo's under the rotor aw hile back. How would I check the gap between the points and rotor (I'm new to this). I have ran a new ignition wire right through all the spark plugs, with no difference in performance, so I don't think it is them. Thanks for the ideas!

You need a feeler gauge to the the pont gap. I don't know what it would be on a TEA . Probably .016 to .020 . Get the engine so the points rubbing block is riding on the highest point of the lobe and then measure or adjust.
This has happened to me but not on my Ferguson. Bad rotor, new plug that won't fire only part of the time. Coil wire that has failed inside the rubber . Dist. caps that cross fire inside the cap under load only. Sometimes if you can get it to miss in the dark of night you can see fire flying about. Good luck.
