I am purchasing a 1951 Ferguson serial 47417 from an estate (I was told it was a 53). It was parked last fall and the key lost. I have hot wired it to get it running but the 3-point will not raise the bushhog. I don't know if I was trying to raise it wrong or if the 10F cold made the hydraulics inoperable. Any suggestions?

If you live in a climate where it is extremely cold you should use the 134 oil in the tractor drive train. It is available at all petroleum distributors. Also the M2C 41 Ford oil can be used.

I have finished fabricating the patterns and jigs to make the mounting bracket for the LIVE THANG live hydraulic attachment for the TO 20 Ferguson tractors.

The live hydraulics will not fix a broken belly pump as it works in conjuncion with the belly pump but it does allow you to use the lift and remote hydraulics without the PTO having to be turning with the addition of the necessary valving and plumbing to any remote hydraulics.

The three point hitch requires no additional valving with the added LIVE THANG live hydraulic attachment.

See the link below for more information.

You probably already know this, but the hydraulics won't work unless the pto is engaged. When I was checking out the TO30 I eventually bought, I did not know that the pto had to be engaged before hydraulics would work. Sounds elementary, but worth mentioning.

Check the hydraulic fluid. Is it milky? If so, could be water, and as Ray says, that could be ice in your 10 F temp. I know mineral oil is correct, but other than the expense of potentially changing it twice you could use 80-90 gear oil to test it. Frankly, most people probably use that anyway. It will work fine, but the additives are not good for the valves over time they say. But you will need to drain it completely in warm spot so you get all the water (ice?) out. Don't use it if you suspect it has ice in it, as Ray said. There are other reasons why it might not lift, but that's first one to check and a likely one, based on your description. Get a manual, if you haven't done so. Links at left on this page will guide you to manuals.

Gear lubes are rated GL-1 thru GL-5. Ask for a gear lube rated GL-1, which is mineral oil without the additives, it should be available at any oil outlet or farm supply store. good luck, Dan

MF # 1103 or Farm Oyl #1103. Is hard to find any more some say. If you can't find #1103 green gear oil I would look for mineral oil SAE 80-90 with EP or MP characteristics. This is what is generally available nowadays. I believe this to be true but not certain.

Dave any MF dealer in your area will have mineral oil, it's merely oil without any additives at all. You can search(hyd oil) back a few weeks to find a post with the stock #, I think it's MF#1101. There have been several posts identifying it from various mfgrs.

Cold weather will hinder operation of the hyds until the oil warms. I suggest draining the system and installing new 80/90W straight mineral oil per owners manual. Capacity is 6 gallons and you must remove all 3 drain plugs to remove all sediment and water from each casting, because each will retain about 1/2 gal. The danger now is if the hyds was operated with ice in the pump, from excessive water in the trans/hyd/diff system. A replacement pump is high dollar if you can locate one.

Thanks for all of the responses. I have the tractor at home and will need to tear it down to find out why. Also found out that I need to rebuild the motor. Such is life with old tractors but this one should be worth it.
