Hi guys!
My babied and loveable TO-20 eats points. I tried NAPA, Blue Streak and dealer models and they still fry. I almost always change the condensor at the same time. My cap and rotor and plugs are all ok. Plug wires too. I'm thinking that the distributor cam clobbers them with a wobble and messes up the hinge. By the way, it's a Delco distributor without any external lubrication fittings that I can find and I'm not using any ballast resistor as the little machine runs strong and it didn't come with one. So quite frankly, I'm not sure how to wire one if I wanted one.

Thanks for any assistance.
Eric P.

We had this problem on another engine (Continental F140 in a fork lift) when we converted it from 6 to 12 volts. Point contacts evaporated, until we installed a ballast - just wired a Chrysler ceramic unit (late '70's- early 80's) into the lead feeding the coil from the ignition switch.

You mention possible hinge damage - are your contacts failing, or the hinges? If hinges, then a worn bush could do it - but my sense is that if the bush were worn enough to cause this, you probably would have erratic running.

You can oil the bushings with a few drops of oil once a year.

Hope this helps.
