130 loose steering

Hi all,

I've noticed that there is a booger weld (broken, and now very loose) between the steering (pitman?) arm and the large castelated nut holding it to the steering box shaft. Basically, what you'd be looking at from the front of the tractor and looking into the opening of the steering box. When I move the steering wheel, that nut moves instantly with it, but the pitman arm doesn't for about a 1/4 turn on the wheel. Is it safe to "assume" that the splines on the shaft and or arm are worn/gone? Any suggestions where I should go from here? Thanks.

Roy, is it a spline, or is it a big keyway that's real sloppy? Sounds more like gone than worn. If yours is a show tractor, remove the axel, remove the bolster, degrease and completely disassemble, sandblast housing, replace all worn or broken internal parts, assemble with new seals, prime, paint and reinstall. If its your everyday tractor, you might see if you could find a better complete housing or bolster. If yours is a just a parade tractor, a skilled overhead experienced booger welder might temporarily correct it, even the little kids sitting on the curb won't see that weld way up there.

Hi Charlie,

I haven't taken it apart yet, but am hoping the shaft metal is 'way' harder than on the arm, and only the arm is worn. This isn't a show tractor, but a worker. Still, if the shaft is bad I'll likely just rebuild it since I'm not sure where I'd ever find a replacement around here. Probably costly to ship as well. Not even a week owning the 130 and the fun begins! Actually, I can't stop grinning every time I look at it :D

ps. I'll post what I find.

Roy, yeah, I know that grin too. There's a parts book with part numbers and pictures for the 130 at CaseIH online, go to the parts search. Also the archives on this site have numerous steering gear topics.
Best Regards,
Charlie

Keep us posted on what you find. If you need parts give me a buzz I know where I can probably scare up some parts for you locally. You are also lucky to have a CaseIH dealer who is very good with the older equipment. Sam

You got it Rootsy. Haven't gotten to it yet. I've just pulled the front wheels off to have the new tires mounted that came with it.

Charlie, checking that site now :)

Sam, thanks for that offer. I will let you know.

That arm is keyed to the shaft and the shaft is tapered. The key and keyways are probably worn. You may be able to rework the keyways for a wider key.

Ok, going to have a go at it. I need to support the tractor some how and remove the front axle? I want to remove the arm from the shaft to see if it's the woodruff key that's worn out. I'm thinking it's fairly involved because if it was easy, why weld?
