300 International or Farmall IPTO

i have a 1955 international 300u with ipto that i just bought recently and it has a pto issue. when disengaged, the pto runs all the time and every few seconds the transmission will make a faint clunk noise but when engaged it does not make the noise. after i adjusted the ipto planetary and brake bands according to the manual there was no change except for the transmission clunk getting a little louder(with pto disengaged). in order to get the pto to stop spinning completely while disengaged, i had to really crank the brake band adjustment down. then instead of hearing the periodic clunk noise, the engine would severely bog down periodically instead. my guess is possibly the planetary band is catching momentarily or something else inside is binding? ive seen archived threads from 15 years ago on here for the exact same problem but the threads so old im not able to reply to it for an answer. im just looking for some advise from someone who already knows the ins and outs of these farmalls or from the originator of one of the older threads before i tear into the machine. i always like to ask questions first. any help is appreciated.

You did not say that you have drained the oil from the PTO, You might learn a lot when you see what is in the PTO housing. The PTO is a separate housing and nobody knows when the oil was ever changed. It only takes like 2 quarts. of Hytran. Does not sound good. You might have to do some exploratory
surgery.

Hello SG welcome to YT! In case you did not know here is what IH stuffed into that PTO box, see link. One set of planetary gears is always running in there when it is locked in the off position. A little whining is normal when you lock down the stop band and a little knocking if the engine run unsteady is normal. Actually bogging down the engine is obviously not right. The link will allow you to view all the parts diagrams for your tractor. Clicking on your tractor description at the upper left by the ..Home.. icon will take you to all the parts section.

Charlieu, I was not aware of this. I
had assumed the PTO housing and
transmission shared the same sump. I
will indeed check the PTO oil first and
go from there. Thanks for the reply!

There are reasons for that. You did exactly what you should have done, which is start a new thread with your question.

People tend to not pay attention to the date on a thread, so when they see a really old thread it looks like a new thread. They read the first post and respond to the first post, completely missing your "add-on" question. You'll receive much better attention to your question if you start a new thread even though yours is "related" to the previous thread.

so i went ahead and drained the oil, pulled everything off with the unit on the tractor until i was able to get the bands out which looks like all the further i can go before having to pull the whole ipto housing off of the tractor. i couldnt find any metal chunks or pieces in the oil, i spun the pto shaft a bunch of times and the planetary operation felt good. the bands have a little over an 1/8'' of brake material left on them and im not sure how much theyre supposed to have on them new but they look fine to me. something else i did notice while apart is the lever inside the housing that alternately operates each band wasnt in a level position with pto lever in neutral or mid position, like someone may have adjusted the linkage to try to get more pressure on the pto engage band. even though each band adjustment is independent from one another im wondering if this could somehow cause the engage band to bind and cause engagement. whats everyones opinion on the correct oil to run in the IPTO?
