10 working hours ago I installed new plug, wires, cap, rotor, points, coil, and timed my 1959 460 gas. Now when I m plowing at 3/4 throttle, it will miss, cough, and a little loss of power. I run non ethanol fuel, I added heat and sea foam to it. No change. Advise needed.

Thank you for your time.

Installed new Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Points, Condenser, Set points, Set Timing, Measured Fuel flow, Installed new Carburetor Kit.

Nope, still missed and died when warmed up under load.

Reinstalled old Chipped, Cracked Coil with one thread stripped.

Problem Solved.

Thank you all who gave me advice.

Well talk again, Im sure.

Third Party Image

I ve tried to attach a picture of my 460 and Snowplow?? I have some parts ordered. Next time I go to the Cabin, I ll play with several of the advice given to me. Fuel flow, Timing, Plugs, Cap, etc. the Valves are above my pay grade. So I ll have haul it home pull the loader and tin and haul it to a repair shop. I live in Woodbury MN so I ll pick someone close. Maybe its plugs, I did Installed D21 s. I do run 91 non ethanol gas. Thank you all for your Advise!!

The 460 set on 200 acres of Swamp on woods. I pulled the loader off, (because of weight) and hauled it to my house, 100miles, away to fix some gauges and a stuck open thermostat. The coil was original but looked rough. With the loader and tin off and painted. It was easy to work on. Parts are tough to get so I replaced everything I could get. I had no missing problems then, and it run perfect until it gets warmed up. In my defense, I have no electric or cell service up there, so working on it is difficult. I bought a county V plow and cut it down to be more manageable for the tractor. I run it about 20 hours a year plowing snow and dragging trees for firewood.

Your working with a 1958 thru 1963 tractor , I also owned a 460 gas , you will get 100 different ideas of what your problem is . I also have run a business fixen OLD I H tractors for over 20 years and around me we had Small dairy frames that ran GAS tractors i also bought fixed and sold I H gas tractors . # 1 the 460 is a nice BIG LITTLE tractor and in around 50 Hp. when NEW . And when gas was gas and back then the MINIMUM octane requirement was 89 . Spark plugs NEW were D 15Y's , for heavy tillage carb screw was set to Five turns off the seat . and ing timing was set at wide open throttle for max advance as to what ever that was and i am NOT walking out to the truck at 1 o clock in the morning to check the books . I have and old customer still running the 460 gas his dad bought new when he bought the new farm way back in like 59-60 . John Boy called me with the same problem your having while he was hauling manure . He kept buying D 21 plugs as someone told him this is what you needed .This all started when GAS was CHANGED for the NEW CARS and does NOT work for a working Newer tractor after 1958 OLD reg. gas was 95 octane Hightest was 105 or BETTER depending in brands and up to 107 . Old STUFF that is carbarated Centrifugal or vac advanced timing does NOT do well on the NEW gas , yes lots of people will disagree with me on this but i am telling you how to make your OLD tractor RUN BETTER . So to fill the tank on that 460 what are you out 50-70 bucks?? and plug wise a set of A/C C 86 or the autolite 316 or 3116 . Also hows about valve adjustment ya ever done that as most i found need a valve adjustment and this is a touchy thing as one must watch out for bridging of the feeler gauge as the rocker arm wares off to one side and you MUSt only feel in the area of ware . The 460-560 were the start of shell we say HIGH PERFORMANCE tractors . engine oil is vary important and NOw with the end of the low ash oil from Case I H or what ever they are calling them selfs today with out usen a low ash based oil can and will lead to exhaust valve failure . So now to the best if my knowledge this leave Delo 100 a diesel engine oil made for the OLD Detroit 2 strokes. as it is almost as low in ash content . Ash builds up on the exhaust valve and it will torch a perfect VEE in and exhaust valve so fast your head will spin . Yes these are hardened valves along with the seats and yes i have done many valve jobs on the 60 sires thru the 66's that had gas engines till we got them switched over to low ash . And NO one diesel oil will not cover over to the gassers .

A cracked distributor (or one with a carbon trace can miss under load. Make sure there are good spark plug wires, either wire stranded, or wound wire magnetic suppressor. The diagnosis is important so cures can be correctly administered. Is the misfire regular such that one cylinder is not working, or is it intermittent and random such that it sputters? if regular in tempo with rpm, wires or a bad/fowled plug are likely. if irregular, electrical or fuel ar possible issues. does pulling the choke part way out help? if it does for a little while the issue is fuel delivery. if no, it is likely electrical. misadjusted points, or a coil running without a resistor that needs one. Go back and recheck you timing at full throttle and set to spec.'s then make sure your load fuel screw is 4 1/2 to five turns off the seat . If this does not help then step up your gas to 89 octane . Also make sure your running the correct heat range plug , i have found that a C 86 A/C or the autolites non resistors work well and on them old puppys NO resistor plug wires good old fashioned Packard 440 wire .460's can be fussy as i HAD one and my one friend still has his dad's that was bought new in 59 , yes i have been out many times working on his as he had about the same problem while hauling Manure , tractor ran fine going down the hill BUT when he tried to come up the hill with a half load left in soft field conditions His would start the missing sputtering and Just plum die and was locked up and NOT even turn over . Let it set and cool she would start and run for a bit then do it again. He was tryen to run a D 21 plug , timing was off and cheap gas. Changed plugs reset timing and got him to up his gas . Problem solved . Give it a one tank try along with the timing and plugs.

You wouldn't believe how many spark plugs are bad out of the box. In the past 6 months I'd say we've had one or more bad plugs in 3 different cars that had them replaced as a maintenance item. Doesn't seem to be any particular brand either. Our replacements, from the manufacturer, in the genuine car brand box, are NGK, Denso and Yura. From what I can tell, Yura is a Korean made Champion.

If it didn't have the miss before the tune up, put the old plugs back in and see how it is.

The 460 & 560s were negative ground electric systems.
Check that the coil has the negative post connected
to the distributor.

Like others said

Timing

Or to hot a plug, pre detonation

Lazy fuel delivery ,to lean

Does sound like when you shut the fuel off and run it out of fuel for storage ?

What was your reasoning to replace all that stuff? Was it not running right, or did you just feel like it was time for a tune up? Ussuslly a coil is not included in a tune up. Unless the old one is found to be faulty at the time. You don't just replace the coil because your doing a tune up.

Anyways, it's a possibility that you have a plug fouling problem on one or more of the plugs. A problem that you would of had before, and new plugs isn't going to fix that. if you did have this problem before. But, ... it should have a miss at throttle set just about anywhere once any of the plugs are fouled. Maybe you do, and you just don't notice it at lower RPM's or unless under a load. The miss would be limited to the cylinders with fouled plugs. This can be checked by removing plug wires one at a time while engine us running. If miss is limited to the same cylinder, then it's a fouled plug problem. Or a compression problem on that same cylinder instead of a plug problem. A fouled plug will often times be all carboned up when taken out and looked at. Carbon may be all caked on and grounding out the electrode.

Does it use any oil? Because if it does, a plug fouling problem is not uncommon with that. Plugs don't really like to burn oil in the cylinders.

It would be interesting to know how the tractor ran before you changed all the parts.

Down the lines where rustred went is also where I will go which is your fuel supply adequate? But I will give a few more details. The Nebraska test on your tractor when new said under a full load it uses 3.75 gallon per hour. Get a pint container or something to measure the fuel flow out of the carb drain and have a catch pan below it. Pull the plug and let it run in the catch pan ten seconds. You will have wanted to have already completed checking for crud as rustred suggests. After the 10 seconds start catching the gas to measure and start a timer for 3 minutes. In 3 minutes you should get a pint and a half to equal 3.75 gallons in an hour. The reason for not catching the first 10 seconds is then you are measuring what came out of the float bowl of the carb which would nullify the test. Why do you not plow at full throttle? Those 221s do not have a lot of torque need to be wound up to make power. I never had the luxury of leisure plowing. I always wanted to turn it black as fast as I could.

I plow with a V plow pined to the loader with the bucket removed. It s a rough 2 track road through the woods to a remote Cabin. I made the plow sit on 3 skis. Usually I cut the road open and than wing the sides in 3rd.

Oh plowing or pushing snow. Plowing too many on here is moldboard plowing in a field. A pint in 3 minutes should cover that.

and also empty the carb drain in a can to see whats in there. if you have rust and water junk time for a carb cleaning , but also check your fuel flow from tank right to carb drain. why u plowing 3/4 throttle?

Learn to read what the plugs tell you. You say a miss have you by chance checked compression and also check the valves and made sure there not needed to be adjusted
