How tall is a Farmall H head?

At the IH factory in 1950, irrelevant. After machining for a mating surface I believe they are all the same within .062. I don't have my SH to measure. If combustion chamber volume is the intention, the head is inverted and leveled then filled with measured liquid to assess volume in CCs. The Distillate head and Kerosene heads will be the same height but different chamber volume. Jim

Glenn, I do not know the answer but I do not think the answer to your question makes any difference as long as it is an H or Super H. They all use the same pushrod, rocker arm shaft stands and rocker arms, per position. I am going to say the height is the same for any head, probably up to the 350. Be interesting if someone has a physical measurement to share between a few.

Might gain more knowledge if you were to say why you are wanting know.

Are you wanting to know if the head you have has already been planed off and how much? And if you can go some more to true it up again?
Or are you doing the tractor pull thing, and want to shave off as much as possible, and don't know where you are at now??

Telling you what your end game should be, might be easier to do than trying to guess at what you got now, and what your planning to do.

pretty slim chance of getting that. you cant just measure it with a tape measure. most times machine shops will stamp the removed amount, as .010 for example.

As to ust how thick they are i can not say . When i would mill a head down i would fist mic it then only take off what was needed to give a good flat finish with no dark spots showing . Then i would stamp off in one corner the amount removed . In H and M head where the problem comes into play is the wideing of the water jacket holes them pesty vee hole as you mill off they start ti get BIGGER at around .045-.050 . And unless that head was stamped by the last guy that took .010-.015 off ya don't know . I do believe that somewhere there is a book on go no go . on engine machining i think my one friend had books on this . But i can no longer call him .

The distillate head casting off my H measures 4.26 from the head gasket to the valve cover gasket. I did not see anything stamped on the bottom.

Thanks Tractor Vet, That is the problem with this head, friends H, leaking water in oil. Machine shop did not find any leaks in head, it looks kind of suspicious at that V area looking at the old gasket, and the corners of the V kind of broken out at the holes, it could have leaked over to push rod holes, Machinest says put some gray silicone around these areas? Cannot find any stamping on head, I always use permatex, the brush on kind around these areas. Owner says put it back on.
