Correction: Farmall C-264 to C-281 Engine Upgrade (Super M-TA)

I've just started into overhauling my Super M-TA that was purchased new by my Granddad and dad. I was not sure if it had ever been rebuilt, but after pulling the head I discovered this piston P/N: 374457-R1 E. I was expecting the original piston size of 4.00 inches, but measured the sleeves at the very top and came up with around 4.128 inches. The pistons were also domed, I assume a "Fire Crater" piston and are 4.125 inches in diameter. This increases it to a 281 cubic inch displacement. I do not have a Parts book for a 450. Was this a part used for the 450 or only for upgrading the Super M's? My goal is to use Farmall 450 (4.125 inch) pistons and sleeves. Just asking for comments.

You already have the 281 cubic Inch motor, so it has been overhauled, The super M and 400 were both 4 inch, and the 450 was 4.125..But the later 400 had a smaller diameter wrist pin, and that gave it more snap and a little more power, i am sure your has bushing in the rod, to accept the small wrist pins. Good Luck

You are correct that it is the Farmall 450 (4.125) bore piston. I have yet to pull the pistons and check the pin sizes.

Correct fire crater piston for standard altitude SM and SMTA. Same diameter as on for 450 or 400 if equipped but piston head little different because of the different combustion chamber size between the gasoline heads. Bigger combustion chamber on the SM, SMTA ones.

40 years ago I OHed my SM. Replaced with the 'big' sleeves. Makes 281CI. That tractor is a horse. tested 60 HP on dyno.

There is not doubt that at some point in time it was rebuilt .maybe even a couple times in it's life . back when they were new many jumped on the band wagon and bought them and many were upset shortly after getting there new toy that the 400's came out with MORE power and MORE fetchers . I have never meet a farmer who ever told me he had enough power and could not use a LITTLE MORE . I also own a S/MTA , mine is a 4 1/8th engine with M&W flat tops and the Gov. , this makes 60 Hp. . Now one of my old customers and long time friend has his grand fathers S/MTA that was bought new and his has always run way better then any 560 and will rival his other grandson's 4010 and almost will run the feed grinder as well as my 806 . When she got tired Vernon had me do a rebuild and wanted it put back the way it was . When we got it apart we found pistons From I H the likes we had never seen before . They were 4 1/8th High Alt. above 8500 ft. in that engine along with a 450 L P intake that i never gave much notice to it when doing work on it and a few other items from a 450 . I found four kits that were the same and put them in . And that was back some 20 plus years ago . Now talk about a Step head Piston those pistons have a real step to them . Yes that tractor is still working for a living . And mine well it is like me semi retired and only comes out when the weather is warm and sunny.
