Had tractor running this morning when all of a sudden it lost power and died. Tried cranking it over to start it back up and it spun over faster and no start. It just didn't sound right for compression so pulled valve cover and I have no valve action. What could have happened?? Broken cam gear, sheared key??I doubt this engine has timing chain but this is wierd. Well i guess I pull the front end of the engine. Crapola

It is gear drive The Continental's cam gear is likely broken at the hub, or sheared Key (or come loose). The tractor is frameless, so the whole front bolster is removed. Real pain. Best of luck. Blocking under the clutch housinf (wood cribbing), then wedge shims under the bolster and top of the axles to keep it from tipping and an engine hoist to lift the weight of the bolster to roll forward. Steering arms removed, the wheels go nuts. Jim

(quoted from post at 15:38:03 01/23/23) Was it getting oil to the top end?

Yes over 45 lbs oil pressure, rockers are getting too. It needs a valve adjustment real bad.

Starting the disassembly

I'm looking forward to what you find and how you fix it. I know IH beefed up the camshaft gear to handle the hydraulic pump but don't know what continental did on their engines.

(quoted from post at 16:21:02 01/23/23) but Jim ,do you think he can ever gets parts, i am sure Diesel Tech would know too !
I Definitely need parts.. been at it all afternoon. See the pics for the broken teeth on cam gear. I will be removing the pan to retrieve all the pieces. The nut was missing off cam gear. Woodruff key on crank pulley is half hammered

OMG! I just realized why the hydraulic pump was not working. That gear that drives off the cam gear is wasted too. WOW!

Yes i plan on it. Do you have the parts? You see the gearsi need in the pics above. Text me pics at 5412285453

Monte's Equipment had all the Continental parts near Chicago if they are still in business.
I had this happen with a Ford. The pump locked up and sheared the teeth off the rear of the cam gear along with a few off the front gear.

i am sure the guy that sold it knew something you didnt know. that just did not happen since you owned it. you just finished it off.

The guy who owned it was deceased. I bought it from no nothing son in law. No doubt that's why it was parked. I sure the hyd pump quit working so he parked it. I had it running and then that can gear came off and the tractor shut down. I pulled the pan this morning and found the teeth. It didn't hurt the crank gear which is surprising
