Super M Pilot Bearing.

Hello All, Are there any clever ways of pulling the pilot bearing on a Super M. The jaws on my gear pullers are too thick, and I tried the 'torch and pry method. As you can see in the pic, it's missing a roller. I don't think i can get a bearing seperator in there? Also, who has the best price on the bearing? It's a Bower MJ-5202-CL. Does the new bearing come with a new race, or are there different races for different applications? It's winter... time to finish this tractor. Been sitting too long. Thanks guys..... Darryl

if you can get a pneumatic impact hammer to it you should be able drive it off, if not and you're comfortable using a cutting torch remove the rollers and trim the race off the shaft, also a die grinder with a cut off wheel works well, cut the race on opposite sides avoiding hitting the shaft then split it with a hammer and chisel.

Have a split bearing puller that two bolts draw half's in. Bearing puller thin enough to go behind the bearing at center part. Then use two bolts screwed in puller with a split cross bar puller under bolt heads to pull it forward. Or a two bar puller with hooked arms can be used on the bearing puller if room.

Buy (or choose from ones you have) a cheap groove joint pliers that can open enough to get behind the bearing. Grind the side away from the bearing with a taper matching the output shaft slope. Put in in place and wire the handles closed tightly. Put a puller on the back side of the pliers jaws to pull! Jim

The IH dealer was the last place I looked, he was also the cheapest , about 50 bucks.

I believe the inner race of that style of bearing has a ridge on either side that the rollers roll between. I would make sure you can visually see this before you proceed with my recommendation. If you see this go ahead and cut the roller cage off with a Dremel or die grinder cut off tool and remove all the rollers. You will then expose a ridge on the bearing to drive against. I am not sure if you may be using a propane ..plumbers.. torch if so I have found they are pretty iffy at supplying enough heat for this type of work. An oxy-acetylene torch will heat the race much faster so it heats the race without so much heat going into the shaft. The bearing pictured I got for my M that I have not used yet is a variation of that bearing number. This variation of the bearing requires a center race which I have not acquired yet. It differs from your bearing which I believe rolls directly on the inside surface of the input or front shaft. This bearing drives inside the front shaft.

I would get it out of the case then just cut it off with the torch. One side cut off will let it slide easy with a chisel and hammer. I would not cut or grind on it in the case ,to hard to get all the debris out of the case and grinding grit is hard to clean out. Torch slag is not much better.

Yeah, you got to take the shaft out, looks like you got plenty of shavings already in the bottom, to clean out,i did my brothers 400, also the local IH was the cheapest, and they have improved the bearing over thee years, the new is much heavier looking !

yeah, your pic looks like a much heavier bearing. Can you get an inner race for that? From IH? Guess i have to make a run to the dealer...

I also thought today about maybe a pitman arm puller will fit in there. Have to take some measurements. I like your idea too. I'm no stranger to making my own tools to solve a problem. Thanks for the input.

Yeah, i will maybe go down to my local Harbor Freight and see if they have a bearing seperator small enough to fit in there.

Think outer race in the input shaft came in a different box than the bearing on last one purchased from a bearing supplier. Think it was like a MU-5205 CL. Best not to use one that inner rollers contact main shaft.

If it is identical to the M, then here is what you want: Do a search for Bower M 5205 EL. That should get you the assembly. BTW, Case IH price is about $125, but I found this one with a web search for much less.

yeah, that bearing with the inner race looks great. thanks for posting. I will search the web for one that's priced reasonable.

yes, as a last resort, i will cut it off. Really don't want to pull the shaft. Will just have to clean out the case really well. thanks.... Darryl
