Super M muffler fixed

Ok with all the ideas that you kind people gave me I have solved my exhaust leak. I wrapped a piece of duct work tape around the pipe threads and then I used a 2 1/4 in band clamp from NAPA to tighten around the muffler. No exhaust leak on my paint job.

He (I believe) was sold a 2-1/2 inch inlet muffler when the 2inch Schedule 40 iron pipe is a standard at 2-3/8 inch OD and always will. Jim

now we seam to get more info on the leak,... that is why u have a leak , that should be a pipe with no threads at the top. and to me all
mechanical problems need fixing before paint. plus the clamp would be for 2 1/2 inch. them mufflers do not just fall onto the pipe when
things are correct.

only the bottom where it screws into the manifold. you will even see the top thread of the pipe in the manifold, or is that all screwed up and welded in?

someone could have just used a nipple as a pipe. those have threads on both ends. so whats the deal on the manifold end? welded in or threaded in?

(quoted from post at 17:06:33 01/11/23) Well I guess it may have been put in upside down who knows.

Not unless they welded it to the manifold. The pipe threads into the manifold; the smooth end of the pipe will not jam in and stay.

Most likely it is an off-the-shelf pipe nipple from Home Depot that is threaded on both ends, and they skipped removing the threads off the top end of the pipe.

Most plumbing supply houses don't deal with the general public so you're left with what box stores and hardware stores have on the shelf.

All the needed to do was buy the next size longer nipple and cut the threads off. OR you could simply stuff the muffler further down over the pipe if it is not already too close to the hood.
