John Deere 350b

Guys Im hoping to find someone knowledgeable on the 350b. I was getting a grinding noise on my left final
drive. When I was pulling it back it would grind. So I though it was worn clutches. Pulled the drive off
replaced the clutches and put it all back together. Didnt replace the pressure plate I had good used clutch
discs. When i adjusted the lever that you push against the throw out bearing I cant feel the throw out
bearing. I have adjusted it all the way out. I couldnt feel it before hand either. The part where you stick a
crowbar in the housing and move to the throw out against the pressure plate. I decided to adjust it back to
the middle without trying to feel the where the bearing is. And now no grinding.. is that a symptom of a
worn pressure plate?

Does your 350B have power assist steering?

Are you going step by step, in the order given, in either the 350B Operator's or Technical manuals? I ask as these can be a pain if the exact procedure is not followed.

When setting steering lever free play, I put a 3/8 nut (threads don't matter) laid flat between the levers and lever stops on the floorboards to hold the free play, rather than a pin or bolt as mentioned in the procedure.

I don't see anything in the procedure I have, about using a crowbar to move the throwout bearing to the pressure plate.

You posted you installed a used pressure plate. To be clear on the discs. Did you put in new friction discs and use the old steel discs, or are they all used discs?

How did the brake band look? is it down to the rivets?

I would expect noise from a worn pressure plate (slipping) when the lever is not pulled since pulling the lever releases the pressure on the disc pack. The brake would be being applied as the lever is pulled back and might make noise if rusty and slipping.

Yeah I think this might have been user error. I did pull a measurement from the dash to the center of the
levers. But I had the brake bands too sloppy after reinstalling the final drive. And using a crowbar to hold
the throw out bearing just touching the forks I couldnt feel it. I used a screw driver instead and could feel it
touching the fingers on the pressure plate. I should have replaced the pressure plate I think it might be a
little weak.. I had a used set of like new condition fiber discs. The plates where a little worn but not terrible.
I ran it a couple of hours I think its good now. Im going to use it some more tomorrow Ill know for sure. Im
gonna print off a step by step guide the manual on adjusting these clutches just to have on hand. Think that
would save me a whole lot of headaches. Ive had the dozer for 5 years and adjusted them quite abit then
forget something and do it wrong.
