I hope somebody can help my starter went on my 500c with the c146 gas engine I took it to my local parts store he took the number off of it and ordered one it came in and he was very busy it looked right.I get it home and the bolt spacing is too narrow.I take it back and my starter already went out for a core.I have tried two starter rebuild shops my starter is a 2 bolt starter 5 inches on center appart. No body can come up with a starter and my parts book only comes up with a 3 bolt starter.Any help would be great

That engine looks to be from the same family as the C113,
123, 135, and 153. It was used in tractors from the A to
the 504. I dont know how many different starters were
used on those tractors but they might be worth checking.

Hello Maple welcome to YT! You know the old saying
about nice guys finish last. In some cases a guy has to
get a little ornery to get your point across, you may
have to hold this guys feet to the fire a bit to get him to
understand he sent your core away and left you with a
starter that does not fit you machine. One thing you
need to keep in mind about the suggestion that a
tractor starter may fit your application. Most IH
tractors the starter comes in behind the flywheel. If on
your machine it comes in from the front laying along
the block or oil pan for example that requires a starter
that turns the opposite direction. I web searched using
the exact wording you titled your post. A lot of options
come up however many are for diesel engines. Just
may be a way to get a number for helping you get the
correct starter. I realize, ordering online if you get the
wrong one often there is a restocking fee. Best of luck!

To your point of holding the guy's feet to the fire. It reads to me like they both looked at it and thought it was right, so he left the store with it. That would say Maplemaker missed the difference as well, not just the store guy, and found it at installation. The timing may just have happened to fit with when the warehouse truck was delivering inventory and picking up cores, the local parts stores around here operate that way. Unless you ask, or they think there may be a problem, the cores one turns in don't set around, it's their policy. Just a possibility.
