450C loader

My crawler will push like a champ in 1st gear, but immediately slips in 2nd or 3rd and struggles to get moving in 4th. By slip i mean, you will hear the motor start to work, then if stops sending power to the tracks and the load comes off the engine. It does keep some tension on the drive as if you pull it into neural it will roll back usually. It is also tricky to shift, have to be quick or it gets stuck in neutral and you have to shut it off. It will not spin the tracks in anything but 1st. It has very wide tracks on it and 9200 hours on the clock. I have only had it for 100 hours. previous owner overhauled the undercarriage. I changed the oil and filters when i got it, I put Agco Permatran oil in it.

What could be going on and where do I start on diagnosing this?

First off take up the floorboard on left side. Pry out the rubber plug on top of the clutch housing. Look down inside to see if oil is present on the inside of the clutch housing. If so, you need to see if it's motor oil or trans. oil. If it's dry , you need to unscrew the metal drum bung between the steer levers. Down inside there will be a 3/16 allen pipe plug there. Grease the allen so you don't drop the plug in. [many top covers are made so it won't drop in, but who knows ?] Install a 200 lb pressure gauge in there where the plug came out. I use a 2 long 1/8 pipe nipple adapted to a grease gun hose so it will lay against the air cleaner can when checking pressures. The pressure should be 175-185 lbs. with the 4 speed gearshift in neutral position between gears. Lock the brake down and start the machine. From the operators seat you should be able to check reverse , high and low pressures at 3/4 rpm range. Let us know what you find and we can go from there.
