my tall vac,54 model and my RACINE 411 both have to live in the big shed. both aircleaner oil cups fill up with water when it rains. ive put 5 gallon buckets on air intake and still fills up. cant find any pin holes rusted in either. the air tube rubber hoses are snugged up soft pliable rubber on the 411.
i remove the oil cups and wrap plastic bags to keep junk out when not in use.. my thought if water gets in grit could too.
any suggestions as to next step. yes a shed be nice but aint happening

You say it fills the oil cups. How much water gets in there? A lot or enough to notice? During heavy rain or light rain, or does that matter? Just a thought here, could rain be getting in around the seam where the oil cup mates to the main canister? Kinda strange that both are getting water in them.

Seems like a lot of condensation gets in there. I had the same on my VAC. I decided to put a plastic pail over mine. The tractor sat most of the summer. I started it and was only going to use it for a few minutes so I didn't take the pail off. Once I started it, a swarm of wasps came roaring out of the pail and I got nailed twice before I could get away! Once they went back to their nest, I got the yard fogging spray out and got close enough to the running tractor so it would suck all that poison up into their nest. It rained wasps for a while. The nest was impressive-as wide as the bucket. Now I just dump the cup before using.

I struggle with water in my 1956 411 as well. My 1952 DC gets next to nothing in the air cleaner. I've never ever covered the DC air cleaner. The DC does have a rain cap on the straight pipe exhaust, it doesn't flap when running. The 411 gets a big coffee can on the air cleaner and exhaust, it doesn't have a rain cap on the muffler because it's really annoying with no load or at idle.

I suspect this is the case. I have this idea that there was a top and bottom to the band clamp. Smaller side went up for better sealing. But this may be a figment of my imagination or limited to certain brands.

It might be that the carb to cleaner tube isn't tight. Rain from the right direction could seep in there as well.

if we get quarter inch rain they are filled about inch deep.
about 6 weeks ago it rained hard n went to start the 411 ,no start.looked n seen oil dripping from cup.removed it n id bet a gallon ran out all over the place oil n water. the vac will fill about the same. .its indoors now lower roof level but fits.
i guess next course is rub silicone around seams n where brackets mount to cleaner body. might be rusted behind the welded brackets?
i see that other 411 does it too and vac. we got water we dont need in a time when we need water.
i havnt owned the 411 very long, the vac ive owned years n dealt with it for over 20 years.time to learn why.
the rubber hoses are snug and not old weather cracked

Wow! That is a lot of water. On the VAC, what if you took a piece of tin and wrapped it around the head of the air intake with the bottom of the tin below the inlet. Secure it with a large hose clamp and see if that makes a difference? Not sure what the other inlet looks like, but it seems too much water just to leak around the seams.
