doing a valve job on my 51 vac new style. The manifod studs turned out with the brass nuts frozen.I don't understand the brass thing. Do I need to seperate them. Were they intended to lock on, since they seem to not have lock washers? Also I am not happy with how close the muffler is to the hood. I thought of putting a short extension so the muffler would be a little higher but 1-15/16 size seems impossible to find. Open to any ideas on mufflers.

Here is a VAC with what I believe is a glass pack muffler????? Was on the tractor when I bought it 15 years ago. It works fine. I dont know what kind of muffler is on my other VAC but its not case and is much bigger, maybe a little more quiet but not much.

I switched my 351 from upflow to down when I found the down header with exhaust pipe and glass pack attached. It seemed much quieter than the larger upflow muffler, but some of that is because the noise was coming out the pipe behind and below me instead of in front of me. But even standing away from the tractor it seemed quieter. There is probably a reason why most of those tractor mufflers are less than $40. Maybe not much muffling going on.

remember as you muffle more than engineers design you increase heat on valves when under load.
also glass pack mufflers are heavier than oem design ,so manifolt and elbow breakage rises. i
i thought ihc mufflers for c farmals were too big n hit hood on vac cases. do what you want its yours just me 2 cents worth

I was thinking about putting an extension as I don't like that muffler so close to the hood. The weight is a valid point. If that thing breaks off new parts are to be had, but the nuts on the old one are firmly welded. The IH muffler is 1 lb heavier. It is 1 wider so 1/2 toward the hood, but if it were elevated a couple inches it would work out I think. Yes, glass packs are heavier I think.

A lot of folks use brass nuts on ex manifolds because they will not corrode to the studs. Perhaps you have brass plated nuts, which do exist, and they will corrode to the studs. You're lucky they came apart that way, and I'd just reuse them. As far as lock washers are concerned they're a no-no on exhaust manifolds, heat makes them worthless and many times they break into pieces and your nut is now loose. My 2 bits. Larry

Larry, I always thought it was as you said, but when I looked at fleabay all the used brass nuts were being sold with the studs attached, so I thought maybe I had it wrong. I am not the only one who finds them stuck on the studs I guess.

We had the same problem on a 430 hood. The local muffler shop made us a custom extension for about 7 dollars.

I will push the envelope further. Has anyone used a non-stock muffler on a vac? I know it has to be skinny. Some glass packs are pretty narrow. Wondering if they would be a lot louder than the standard, as their doesn't seem to be much sound deadening to it.

We got our VAC muffler from Fleet Farm in the IH section.

I also have an IH muffler on my 1946 VAC. But I purchased the one with original IH specification for an A, B, or Farmall C that was designed from original IH drawings by Ken Updike. These look the same as the IH Stanley mufflers you get at Fleet-Farm, but they are really quiet. They fit the VAC with no modification. You might have to get them from an IH dealer or from a company that sell antique tractor parts. Al

My brother has a 1650 Oliver with a Farmall muffler on it, so it will go into the shed. It is kinda weird. It almost sounds like a Farmall when it runs, even though it is a 6 cylinder

Thanks, I am all about quiet these days. I also have a ford 2000 3cyl gas. That thing is LOUD! No way around that except to replumb for a downflow muffler. Even then the engine is still loud.
