More WD45 stuff.

On the water pump and fan hub there is slotted holes that Im assuming are to open up or close up the pulley to match the belt width. Not sure if I should mess with that or not.

that is correct. but you will need to take it all apart and make sure its all clean and freed up , i had to do that also. plus that belt looks worn. plus it looks like that one had someone mad at it. looks like it needs to be closed up with that belt. i had to replce the water pump on mine so i got everything all nicely freed up.

so what year is that 45? they have a half inch longer stroke than the WD and 25 more cid. both are 4 inch bore.

I always spin that pulley so it is narrow as the belt works better. BUT, you might have to take it off the tractor to make it move as it could be rusted solid over decades of use like that.

Thanks DrAllis. On my Massey Harris 25 it has a similar set up and it was rusted up pretty good to. Ill take it apart and get it freed up.

Check the numbers too, that was the last year for the WD and the later ones had the 45 transmission(curved shifter)When you bought decals for new paint they came with WD & WD45 decals. My neighbor has a 52 WD45,he didn't know the difference till I told him.

To be a WD45 the serial number has to be WD-146607 and up. All model WD's are from sn 7 thru 146606. The curved gearshift means a helical gear/constant mesh transmission like an automobile was at that time. Stronger and quieter it was to accomodate the increased HP. This happened at chassis s/n 127007 and up on the WD as a change that was intended for the soon-to-be WD45. This transmission change was made in the Fall of 1952. Low gear was just a tad slower and road gear and reverse were faster, compared to the old WC/WD straight stick/sliding spur gear transmission design.

That design was originally used on the WC. It was the only way to tighten the belt on the tractors that didn't have a generator. For whatever reason, they stuck with it, even with the addition of the generator and it's belt tightening slotted bracket.

The serial number on this tractor is WD156178. On tractor data that puts it into a 1953 model year. I still havent checked the parts tractor. Cant read the whole serial
number on it. Thanks you for your help and info it is appreciated.
