AC5040 power steering

I have a leak in the metal tube that goes from the power steering reservoir to the actual power steering ram. The line appears to have rubbed against the alternator for 40+ years and worn through. I am looking for a picture or good parts diagram that shows how the tube fastens to the reservoir.

I will have to remove the alternator to get access. Hoping for an idea before I dig into attempted repair. I have the operator's manual and a shop manual. Neither provides a good view of the reservoir.

A few years ago I was able to patch the primary metal tube for the main hydraulic pump with a couple compression fittings and hose. A local hydraulic shop made those up for me. Hoping I can do a similar fix. Or, if the fitting can be removed from the reservoir replace the entire "hose/tube".

Thanks for any info.

You can go whatever route you want, but if it were me, I would simply take it off, clean up the spot, and braze over the hole. Done that more times than I can
count. Often on closed center systems running higher pressures that this.

Thank you for the link. Will check it
out at library where I can get internet
access....and see it on a bigger screen
than my cellphone.

Do you know if it is threaded onto the
reservoir? That would make it easier to
remove for repair.

If it is the right drawing, it appears to be a low-pressure hydraulic hose with clamps between the reservoir nipple and tube.

Progress report. Brazed the tube for the
power steering. I plan to put a rubber
boot (piece of hose) on the spot where it
rubs the alternator bracket. With luck it
will last another 40 years.

Should be warm enough this weekend to put
back on the tractor.

Not sure how to bring this topic back
into the discussion. I posted a picture
of the brazing on the power steering
line. Nice warm day in Wisconsin so I
assembled the pieces. So far, so good.
No immediate leaks.

I split a rubber hose and slipped it
between the line and the alternator
bracket.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Trying Modern View. I don't use the AC5040 as much since I bought a newer John Deere a couple years ago. But, it did a lot of work making hay, plowing snow and cleaning up brush. The old gal leaks oil from a few spots, despite tightening every bolt I can find. Have to keep her around for occasional duty.

Actually starts better in cold weather than the newer tractor.
