Sunday Drives

Summer was finally upon us here in Northern Maine. We have two types of industry up here, one being "Forestry" (Wood Products) and the other "Farming" (Potatoes). There is no shortage of farm tractors and equipment around here! I have been restoring old Farm Tractors for the past 6 years, and have found it easier and less expensive to hit all the auctions and purchase whole tractors for parts needed.

My wife who works at a local school, and only has weekends and summers off, while on the other hand, I am self employed as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic, (and I play Mr. Mom by day), I have all the free time I wish to make. We like to load the kids and go for a ride on the weekends. We "Do The Loop" which is a 200 mile trip around the northern most part of Maine. We detour down the side roads, "Just to see the scenery". I have found many tractors doing this. I even have my wife looking for these "Gems"....

About 6 years ago, we just started dating, we just happened to stop at a garage sale. When we exited the car, I proceeded back to the road toward the tractor with the "For Sale" sign on it! She asked where I was headed, and I just pointed. That was the first tractor I bought with her by my side, and have acquired quite a few since.

I always come home with some thing of use, even if no one else knows what it is or the value of such. We now take a little "Tag Along" trailer towed behind her car on these little weekend trips. Never fails, you always find something when you can't get it home!

Just last month was my birthday,....36 years young! I received a big "Tow Chain" for a present, and for Fathers Day, I got a case of old "Oliver Shop Manuals" (Good as Gold to me!) Where she found these things is a mystery to me.

She still gives me "The Look!" everytime I mention tractors......My point being, "If you treat your mate well, you can train her, at least a little". Now she has her friends looking for those old, junk tractors. We have found them in the darndest places from a full tractor in someone's basement in the city, (Was reassembled down there), to the rock wall behind someone's barn and everywhere in between.

Now we are into "Stock" Tractor Pulling, and we involve the whole family. I even have her helping out when she's not attending to the kids. My son, (2 years old) has a pedal tractor, and now hooks it to anything he can find and pulls it around behind him. Remember, involve your whole family and your hobby will much more enjoyable.

Have fun with your tractors, and play safe!
