A combination of inexperienced driving and inexperienced drinking led to an almost deadly situation on U.S. 77 near Ceresco over the weekend, Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said.
Sunday, one of Wagner's deputies stopped a teenager after clocking his pickup at 104 mph in a 65 mph zone on the highway near Waverly Road.
Before the stop, the pickup had been going south in the northbound lanes near Ashland Road, Wagner said, prompting witnesses to call 911.
When the deputy arrived, the pickup was in the correct lane, but the teen drove over a curbed median near 56th Street and Fletcher Avenue to pull over after the deputy turned on his cruiser lights.
A breath test showed the driver, 18-year-old Jonathan G. Renteria, had a blood-alcohol content of .110 percent. Wagner said he told the deputy he thought he was in Council Bluffs, Iowa, his hometown.
"A disaster, I think, was narrowly averted," the sheriff said.
The deputy cited the Renteria on suspicion of driving under the influence, willful reckless driving and speeding, then took him to detox.
