I bought a used 2004 2500, non HD about a year ago. Although I don"t tow frequently, I have been fine with it. Never the same load I"m towing, so not sure how to rate that for you. Depending on how it"s equipped, I believe the HD came standard with a 4:10 rear end while the non-HD was a 3:73. You could get either on each truck though. I drive a lot of empty miles too, so I preferred the 3:73. I think mine is rated around 10,000 for towing and the HD was a couple thousand pounds more. Payload was not a big difference. If I remember, cars.com had a good compare feature on it that I used. Can"t vouch for it"s accuracy but seemed close. You may be able to get it at a better price if you don"t need the HD. Not sure about resale, but keep mine for a long time so not an issue. Hope that helps
