I do long distance trail riding, not the social stuff. Saddles are like shoes, most are fine for short rides, but a pair of dress shoes would kill your feet if you tried to walk a couple of miles in them.
After going through about 5 different saddles and a pretty good chunk of $$, I found "Specialized Saddles". They were developed by Dave Kaden, an endurance race rider and the national 50 mile champion in 2000.
They are the most comfortable I have ever ridden for both me and the horse. They have a very unique pad system that makes them truly interchangeable between any horse.
You can buy a set of pads for each horse, I think the pads are $70, and fit one saddle to all your horses. Many saddles claim they can fit different horses, but this one really can. It went from my broad-backed QH to my much slimmer Arab.
They are a custom saddle, but not too bad in $$. Mine cost $1400 new about 7 yrs ago. If you watch Ebay you can pick one up for about $900.
There are reps and fitters all around the US. It is money well spent.
